Gawad Kalinga
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gawad Kalinga (GK) (English: "to give care") is a Philippine-based anti-poverty movement launched in 2001 by Couples for Christ, to care for worse-off Filipinos and survivors of natural disasters. GK is now a growing multi-sectoral partnership with the motto "NO MORE SLUMS". Together with its partners, Gawad Kalinga actively works in poverty-stricken areas to improve their quality of life. All of the buildings in a GK Village are painted colorfully, and are aptly named "colors of hope". Gawad Kalinga has become very popular in the Philippines, and is even attributed to the modern Philippine way of life.
On October 4, 2003, Gawad Kalinga formally launched its GK777 campaign, which envisions building 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years in the Philippines through, with October 4, 2010 as the target date for delivery.
And although GK was started by a Christian family ministry, the GK communities are also open to Filipino Muslims and other denominations, which is evident at the GK villages in Mindanao, and also the International Villages in other countries. Gawad Kalinga is ultimately driven by the mantra, "Less for self, more for others, enough for all." Gawad Kalinga is also associated with another anti-poverty program, called ANCOP.
