Gas engine

In the UK a Gas engine means an engine running on gas, such as coal gas or producer gas. It does not include a gasoline engine which, in the UK, is called a Petrol engine. US usage may be different.

A gas engine differs from a petrol engine in the way the fuel and air are mixed. A petrol engine uses a carburettor or fuel injection but a gas engine uses a three-valve system with separate inlet valves for air and gas.

The best known builder of gas engines in the UK was Crossley.
