Wiki markup for dates
You are formatting dates incorrectly. Please read Help:Editing and learn how to wikify dates properly and why this is important. Uncle G 17:13, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- See this page for why I formatted the dates this way - Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates_of_birth_and_death Gary Kirk 18:20, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- That page does not anywhere recommend the markup that you are using. Read both it and the help page that I pointed to above, again. Uncle G 13:57, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- In two other articles I've read of living people - Alex Lovell and Jennie Bond, the date is formatted as on the page above. Therefore the way the article is currently formatted is correct. --Gary Kirk 17:04, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Alex Lovell does not use the broken markup that you are using, and Jennie Bond was simply wrong like the article whose markup you keep breaking was wrong. Once again, read Help:Editing and learn how to wikify dates properly.
While you are at it, please learn how to make internal links properly, too. You've not used the correct markup for internal links in this discussion here. I've corrected it for you, so that you can see how to make internal links properly. I strongly recommend that you read Help:Editing and familiarize yourself with the wiki markup. Edits to Mariah Carey
Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for the contributions! We're always happy to have new Wikipedians with a serious interest in improving articles! As you can see, we're also very keen on maintaining a neutral point of view (or NPOV) in all articles. Unfortunately, some of your edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's NPOV policy, and have been reverted. There's a great article about the NPOV policy that has tips on how to effectively write about disparate points of view without compromising the NPOV status of the article as a whole. We thank you for your interest in helping Wikipedia to be well-rounded in its presentation of controversial subjects, and look forward to being able to fully incorporate your contributions! Myma Seldon
I think you can help a lot of people to change their minds if you include her TV work in the article. BTW, thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear at least someone thinks I've been sensible at some point today. - Mgm|(talk) 20:56, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- Done, after more info from Myma --Gary Kirk 20:22, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Big Brother house
Thanks for telling me where the UK Big Brother house is. I guess not everybody knows, fans like FireFox and people on the the other side of the world (me) have no idea.--Commander Keane 20:47, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, yeah, I suppose not, just EastEnders is also filmed at Elstree, its quite well-known here in England. Gary Kirk 20:56, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
Jk and Joel
Hey, I did look at the edits, I was the one who reverted the vandalism and then edited your post. I should have been clearer as to why I removed that tag. Anyway, I'm sorry for the confusion. Have a good one. - oneofmanysteves
Image:Swearing.png
Hello. I made what I feel is a better image than your Image:Swear.JPG. It's also in a more appropriate file format. I'm adding Image:Swearing.png to the user warning template {{obscene}}. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 08:29, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
- Well in my opinion, mine was better, and what difference does the file format make? Gary Kirk 10:46, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Harry Potter characters
Dear Gary, It's okay to create articles for fictional characters, but please make clear that they are fictional. Believe it or not, there will be people accessing this encyclopedia who don't know anything about the Harry Potter series. Deb 12:56, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- You mean Dirk Creswell, Deb? After creating that article, I read Minor Ministry of Magic officials, I saw he was listed there. So maybe someone could redirect Dirk Creswell to there. Gary Kirk 11:53, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Jhajharia
Thank you for trying to be helpful by marking Jhajharia for speedy deletion on the grounds that it was empty. However, although the article certainly was short, it was by no means empty - it said that Jhajharia is one of the gotras of the Jat people in the Jhunjunu district of the Indian state of Rajasthan. In fact, it was listed as part of the category "Gotras of Jats" (which, I will concede, isn't as well-named as it could be); this should have been an indicator as to what it is.
There's a significant difference between an empty article and a stub article; what I would have done (and, in fact, what I did do, after removing the speedy notice) was add a link to the article gotra.
No harm done, and I know you meant well - just be a bit more careful henceforth, okay? DS 18:08, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Picture of school.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Picture of school.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairusein|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Pak21 11:31, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Speedy
Please, realize that you're misusing the {{nonsense}} and {{empty}} tags. If you tag an article as needing context, then this should mean that you think it is not nonsense, and does not need to be speedily deleted. Similarly, although I know full well that the {{empty}} tag doesn't necessarily mean an article is literally empty, you have to better distinguish between an article which doesn't even have the bare minimum of information necessary to have an understanding of what sort of thing the title refers to, and an article which does.
I know you mean well, but in the past few days you've listed at least two articles for speedy deletion that didn't merit that treatment. Possibly more, but those are the ones that I caught and salvaged.
Be more careful, okay? DS 13:42, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

- No I haven't. And I don't want to. We're building an encyclopedia here, and that's what I want to get on with. I see this as the end of the matter now.

- No problem. I've got your user page on my watchlist anyway, and noticed this little bit. Cheers --Pak21 21:58, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
thanks for the tips
what would be great would be an editing page short form, like a one page printable tips on editing, so that i wouldn't have to read a whole big thing. Does that exist?

- Hi Jamie,
To start with, if you haven't already, read WP:HEP. Hope that helps! ;-) --Gary Kirk (talk) 18:38, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
One more quick thing
I learn better by trying. How can I be one of those wikipedians who monitors new content? Like, go throw new changes and make corrections? Thanks for the link, it was useful! JamieJones 04:00, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

- yep. Found it. Thanks.

Subst
When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. |
— FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 17:28, Dec. 29, 2005
Because you are leaving a message that is intended to retain the same meaning regardless of later changes to the template, for one. This can result in confusion for whoever (usually a vandal, but sometimes just a newbie user) who reads it. Also, if the warning text in a template is modified, and a lot of pages use the template in the "live" form, the recaching of numerous talk pages causes server lag. So, generally all templates intended to replace a manually written message to another user should be subst'ed. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 17:40, Dec. 29, 2005
images
can you delete all the images that i've uploded except for the one called doctornew05.jpg /
thanks --Madcowpoo 11:00, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- No prob, I just hope it has the desired effect. I would go ahead and delete all these images now, if I was you. :) pfctdayelise 11:41, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

- Oh... *looks faint* Actually, now I have no idea why I assumed you were an admin. My apologies. I've just left a note on a talk page of one who will hopefully take care of this. pfctdayelise 14:26, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Re: HP project userboxes
Sigh. It's the whole snafu with Kelly Martin and the fair use image deletion stuff. I don't know what we can and can't use. If I'm not mistaken, Evilphoenix created the templates originally; try asking him. Hermione1980 17:36, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
