Thanks for writing the article in the first place. I hope you stick around wikipedia for a long time. Your enthusiasm is greatly welcomed here. Keep up the good work. Remember, nothing ever has to be perfect because there are 1,000s of others out here to help.

Ive noticed your spat with User:80.255 on the Sunderland page. What he/she's doing is completely unnaceptable. [edit] Sunderland
I am thinking about making City of Sunderland be an article about the city of Sunderland, and making Sunderland just be about the area that used to be part of the county borough. This follows precedent we've set for districts that include disconnected urban areas or large rural districts (e.g. Lancaster vs City of Lancaster, Canterbury vs City of Canterbury, and Peterborough vs City of Peterborough, etc. (See Wikipedia:List of English districts to disambiguate for a big list of districts we've done this too).
I am wondering if you have any feelings in this matter. Thanks, Morwen 17:08, May 3, 2004 (UTC)
- Great idea. I renamed Sunderland City of Sunderland, but User:G-Man was none too happy about what I called my hometown and reverted. I have some notes and half articles that can be used for Sunderland. The City is in 3 parts, Sunderland, Washington and Hetton & Houghton, so the article can certainly be divided. garryq 18:06, 3 May 2004 (UTC)

Hey, no problem at all. I thought the short forms may be useful as redirects, for exampel if somebody types in "Anthony Lambton" in the search box. Happy editing -- Chris 73 | Talk 01:48, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
Hi - just a small point this, but when you make links such as the one you just edited in Jack the Ripper, can you please not use underscores (_) for spaces. There's no need to use them, and it makes links look a bit ugly. All the best--Camembert

Hi, Garry. I notice you have reintroduced the error in the article on Richard III of England which says that there are records of Hastings' trial. This is a very controversial article, and it's important to keep it NPOV. If you feel I am wrong and you have evidence that such records exist, please quote a reference and location where they can be viewed. Deb 11:53, 17 May 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your note. I've heard the claim before, that there are records of Hastings' trial, but all the books I've read say that there aren't. However, if they do exist, I'll be quite happy to give way. I don't know if you saw "Historyonics" the other week - that was a surprisingly even-handed interpretation of the known facts, I thought. If the Richard III talk page is short, it's probably because I gave up arguing with a certain person who was determined to have her own way; I just waited for her to leave the project, which happened more quickly than I'd hoped. However, you'll find the controversy has been shared out between several articles, including Edward IV of England, Edward V of England, Princes in the Tower, Dominic Mancini and Philippe de Commines, to name but a few! Deb 16:46, 17 May 2004 (UTC)
Hi again. It's not your fault you took what someone else had written at face value, but I don't think these records exist. I'll have a look at that article on Morton, and see if I can help make it more even-handed. Unfortunately, the only way it can ever be "proved" is to produce the records of the trial. Otherwise, we have to assume there aren't any. Deb 16:47, 18 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] 1974
I'm digging up some fascinating stuff in these researches - have a look at the Administrative counties of England#1974 : Two-tier section for a start. Of note for Tyne and Wear is that (a) the Local Government Bill 1971 actually named it 'Tyneside' (lated amended for reasons I am sure you can imagine), and it was to include Easington and Seaham. Looking at a map that would have left Durham practically landlocked! Morwen 22:28, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Didn't know about "Tyneside". The Redcliffe-Maud Commission in 1969 (?) never managed to get that far. --garryq 22:38, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)
-
- Apparently they didn't think it was worth a metropolitan county. They just recommended ones based on Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester.
-
- There are some particular things I'm going to have to look up a bit more. In particular, there were 'passenger transport authorities' for the conurbations well before 1974. Apparently Greater Manchester had a South East Lancashire North East Cheshire (SELNEC) PTA. I wonder if Tyneside had a similar one. Another intesting thing is apparently there were plans for a 'South Hampshire' metropoplitan county, consisting of presumably the Southampton/Portsmouth areas. Morwen 22:48, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Cambourne
Cambourne is definitely worthy of an article. But it shouldn't appear on the list of towns, as by any standard I can think of it isn't a town. Note that the list of towns is not just a list of places, which are usually listed on the appropriate county or borough article. I've removed Cambourne again, along with Barnt Green, which has if anything even less of a claim to the status. Warofdreams 13:33, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image:COA_Prince_Harry_Wales.gif and Image:Prince_William_Wales.jpg copyright status
Do you know of the copyright status of these images? Marnanel 16:37, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- As a section of the Royal Household they may be {CrownCopyright}, but as Garter Principal contends "that the question of copyright is not really relevant" in an heraldic display, I prefer {fair use} in wiki's educational context. --garryq 17:51, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
-
- You could probably get away with public domain. If "the question of copyright is not really relevant" this would suggest that they are uncopyrightable, or they are effectively so, as it would be impossible for their copyright holders to assert any intellectual property rights over them. — Trilobite (Talk) 05:51, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] British counties - again!
Hi Garryq,
This topic has become a hot potato all over again. There's been constant discussion and argument for weeks. We've now reached a critical point and are having a straw poll on a particular issue to see if we can make some progress that way; if this fails we may need to go to official mediation.
Would you be willing to take a look at the straw poll and consider voting? It was posted on the policy talk page on 22nd August 2005. Many thanks Chris Jefferies 23:37, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:39691753 lambton 203pa.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Colin Powell COA 1.png
Thanks for uploading Image:Colin Powell COA 1.png. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. It looks like the coat of arms designed by Andrew Jamieson for the Heraldry Society of Scotland. I'm not sure that your mangling of things qualifies as a "new rendering." [edit] Image Tagging Image:Lyon at dissolution.jpg
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Lyon at dissolution.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. [edit] Image:Charles coronet.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Charles coronet.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
Replaceable fair use disputed
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] North East England Newsletter
Garryq, as mentioned on the Project Page, all the members will receive a newsletter informing them of all the latest news about WikiProject North East England. Their are a small selection of news stories in which I would like to bring to your attention:
As you will most probably know, the Project will be one month old in less than twenty four hours, so far the project appears to have been successful so far, almost five hundred articles have been tagged informing viewers that the article is within the scope of this project, the Project now has eight members which is good but I'm sure that will double or even triple within the time of the next newsletter
As mentioned above, urgent help is needed for tagging articles and rating them for their quality and their importance, by viewing:
and all of the subpages, a range of untagged articles can be found, there will be at least a thousand their in which require tagging and I/we need your help in doing this!
That is all for this newsletter, if you would like to bring anything to my attention or have any comments to make then please leave me a message on my talk page or leave a note on the Project talk page and I/someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for reading and I hope you are still enjoying being a member. Regards - Tellyaddict 20:46, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
