Gary Smith (sportswriter)

Gary Smith is one of America's most acclaimed sportswriters. He is currently a senior writer for Sports Illustrated.

Smith has been called one of America's best sportswriters as well as America's best magazine writer. He has won the National Magazine Award, the magazine equivalent of the Pulitzer, three times. [1] His pieces have also appeared in The Best American Sports Writing series more than those of any other writer. [2]

Smith's pieces are generally long feature stories. Two of his most acclaimed pieces were features on Pat Tillman [3] and George O'Leary.

Smith is a graduate of LaSalle University. Before coming to Sports Illustrated, he wrote for the Wilmington News-Journal, the Philadelphia Daily News, the New York Daily News and Inside Sports. His writing has also appeared in Time, Rolling Stone, and Esquire. [4]
