Gary Kenneth Penrice (born Bristol, March 23, 1964) is a former professional footballer. He played for Bristol Rovers, Watford, Aston Villa and QPR as a striker.
A crafty player with an exquisite touch who started out as an explosive striker but settled later into a creative midfield role. Penrice was in the same class as Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Holloway at school and they still remain close friends today.
His 20 goals fired Bristol Rovers into the Third Division play-off final in 1989 only to be beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Port Vale.
Missed out on a fairytale Third Division Championship success with Bristol Rovers to sign for Watford FC for a club record £500,000 sale late in 1989.
Snapped up by Aston Villa for a cool £1million in 1991 only to score once for the club in 20 games. Former Rovers boss Gerry Francis took him to QPR just 8 months later where he joined an ex-Rovers enclave and teamed up again with Holloway.
Penrice made his debut for QPR in November 1991 against Aston Villa and went on to play 82 league games scoring 20 goals.
Returned to Watford FC in November 1995 after 20 top-flight goals and reverted to a deeper midfield role.
Resigned for Bristol Rovers on a free transfer in the summer of 1997 to lead them to the Division 2 play-offs that year alongside player-boss Holloway in the centre of midfield. Later retired from playing and became Holloway's assistant manager when Phil Bater moved to take control of the youth team.
He later went on to follow Ian Holloway at QPR as assistant manager. He is currently a scout at Plymouth Argyle.
Penrice is married to Louise and has three daughters, Amy, Rebecca and Grace.
