Gary Merasty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gary Merasty, M.Ed., is a Canadian politician and the Liberal Member of Parliament for Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River in Northern Saskatchewan. A former two-time chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council, Merasty was the Liberal candidate in the 2006 Canadian election. In one of the closest races of the election, Merasty defeated Conservative incumbent Jeremy Harrison.
On election night, Merasty's victory was reported as 10,225 to 10,119, a margin of 106. Jeremy Harrison challenged the result, but a judicial recount confimed Merasty's victory by a reduced margin of 68 votes.
On the morning after the election, Harrison alleged widespread misconduct, claiming that the turnout at some Liberal-won polls on Indian reserves was over 100%, including the poll at the Ahtahkakoop reserve. (This poll was the last to send in its results, taking three and a half hours to report.) In addition, the Ahtahkakoop reserve held a raffle for a TV for those who voted in the poll. (Allegations that the raffle was for Liberals only are disputed by local officials.) On February 20, Harrison announced that he would not pursue the matter further.[1]
Former SIGA CEO Dutch Lerat is suing SIGA and the FSIN for wrongful dismissal, which Gary Merasty is named in the suit but is not being sued. [2]
