Gary L. Herod

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary L. Herod was a Texas Air National Guard pilot who was killed when his plane crashed on March 16, 1961.

Shortly after takeoff from Ellington Field southeast of Houston, Texas, Herod experienced engine failure. Although he could have ejected safely, he remained with the plane to ensure that it cleared the populated areas of Houston. By then, he was unable to eject before the plane crashed in a then-rural area of southwest Houston. The plane crashed into land just north of Brays Bayou. A tree and a plaque near Meyerland Plaza commemorate his heroism. The Gary L. Herod Elementary School in nearby Maplewood subdivision is named for Herod.
