Garneau (Edmonton)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Garneau is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is located in the heart of Old Strathcona immediately to the east of the University of Alberta campus. It's central location gives residence good access to downtown Edmonton, Whyte Avenue, and other areas of the city.

The neighborhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River valley. In the river valley immediately below Garneau are the Kinsmen Park, the Kinsmen Sport Centre, and the John Walter Museum.

Other neighborhood adjacent to Garneau are Queen Alexandra to the south east and McKernan to the south.

Today, the vast majority of dwellings in the Garneau neighborhood are high rise apartments in buildings with five or more stories and low rise apartments in buidlings with fewer than five stories. Most of these are rented, making Garneau an attractive location for students at the University of Alberta to live.[1]
