The Garland Amateur Radio Club (GARC), was formed in 1957. It offers programs of educational and civic activities in the second largest city Garland, Texas in Dallas County. It is an ARRL Special Service Club supporting a full complement of activities including Field Day participation, license classes, contesting, and active support of public service events. The club also maintains the Emergency Communications Center, located in downtown Garland.

GARC holds its meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Garland Women's Activity Building at 713 West Austin Street at Glenbrook — just west of the Garland Public Library. A short social meeting starts at 7:00 p.m., followed by programs of interest to the amateur community. If you would like more information, drop by any club meeting. Visitors are always welcome! We actively support education to help get your first amateur radio license, or to upgrade it. Classes are offered during the year for theory, code, and in practical applications (home-brew). You need not be a GARC member to attend.

The club is a 501c3 charitable organization. Many members are active in other public service and educational activities which are not necessarily sponsored by the club (such as public service events, RACES, and the VE program).

The GARC currently operates two repeaters under the FCC callsign K5QHD. They operate on 146.660 MHz and 442.700 MHz and are located near the Baylor Hospital in Garland. They are open repeaters with a closed auto-patch, available 24 hours per day.

After the breakup of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003, the club's 2 Meter repeater was put to use to provide reliable communications for recovery effort. [1]
