Garden of Eden Creation Kit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Garden of Eden Creation Kit is a MacGuffin-like device in the computer game series Fallout. It is mentioned as an advertisement in the back of the first game's manual, and is the device the main character in the second game seeks.
Resembling an ornate silver briefcase, the Garden of Eden Creation Kit was a device intended for those who had survived World War III in the isolated "Vaults". Working in conjunction with the power and production systems already present in the Vaults, they would help the inhabitants rebuild when their Vault was opened
The following tools and equipment are believed to be in a GECK:
- Digital library full of many relevant texts
- Fertilizer
- Seeds
- Chemicals that could detoxify radiation-tainted soil and make it more ready for agriculture
- Force field schematics
- Chemicals which could aid in the production of primitive buildings out of sand (or rather, "sandcrete")
- Clothing (although some believe that this was simply an "unlock code" allowing Vault suit-creators to fabricate other forms of clothing beyond the yellow-striped blue jumpsuits)
Certain other items are also believed to be inside a GECK, but are apparently already present in the Vault itself. These include:
- A power plant capable of powering the new town
- A replicator for the production of food and other such necessities
[edit] GECK as a miracle device
It is interesting to note that the primary mission of the Fallout 2 main character is to retrieve a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, believing that it will save their primitive tribal society from ruin. Having problems with crops withering and cattle dying, the elders of the society look at the GECK as a literal Eden creator. In this respect, the main character's journey is little more than a fool's errand. The GECK does not truly create a paradise out of nothing, for it is implied that Shady Sands was created with a GECK, thus showing it was the hard work of the people there, not the GECK, that helps the town prosper, as it is little more than a farming village in Fallout 1, a far cry from Vault City.
Regardless of how it would play out in reality, the GECK apparently does act as the miracle device that Arroyo envisions it to be. The end sequence of the game tells us that the village is eventually rebuilt into New Arroyo, and shows us a scene of a rather nice town comprised of white buildings with bright lighting and grassy gardens. Also, earlier in the game, the player sees a similar town, Vault City, constructed using the resources of Vault 8. The apparent perfection of the city is, however, marred by the rampant hypocrisy and discrimination regularly practiced by the upper-class townsfolk.
