Garden Plain is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 797 at the 2000 census. The name is a description of the rich agricultural land.

Garden Plain is located at 37°39′38″N, 97°40′55″W (37.660451, -97.681811)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²), all land.

Garden Plain is located on combined US Route 54 and US Route 400

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 797 people, 286 households, and 201 families residing in the city. The population density was 569.9/km² (1,474.8/mi²). There were 292 housing units at an average density of 208.8/km² (540.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.37% White, 0.38% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.63% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.38% of the population.

There were 286 households out of which 39.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.47.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.5% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $48,068, and the median income for a family was $56,375. Males had a median income of $40,750 versus $25,577 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,946. About 2.8% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
