[edit] History

[edit] Tekken 2

Ganryu was banned from the sumo ring after he was caught fixing fights in his favor. Blackballed from the only sport that he was capable of fighting in, Ganryu ended up being employed by Heihachi Mishima in Tekken. Later, he works for Kazuya Mishima in Tekken 2. Entering the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, Ganryu ended up falling in love with Michelle Chang - a love that Michelle was oblivious to, believing Ganryu to be a disgusting, woman-crazed madman. After Michelle defeated him, and the disappearance of Kazuya, Ganryu returned to Japan.

[edit] Tekken 5

However, his ban from Sumo was lifted, and he became the youngest ever Rikishi. Among the dialogue in Tekken 5, it is stated that Ganryu has never won a championship. After the events of Tekken 2, Ganryu opened a sumo stable and worked as a trainer to other sumo wrestlers.

One day, while watching a televised showing of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, he spotted Julia Chang as one of the competitors. Remarking how much she looked like his old crush, Michelle, Ganryu decided to enter the fifth tournament, convinced that he would win Julia's heart if he recovered her lost Forest Rejuvenation Data.

[edit] Ganryu's Endings

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

===Tekken 2=== Canon Ganryu is shown standing in the middle of a sumo circle. After a few seconds, Ganryu slaps his hands together, stretches his left arm out towards the left, puts his right hand on his right hip, stomps the ground, and then he stands up straight with his arms by his sides, which is the position that Ganryu remains in. After a few seconds, the scene slowly begins to fade away. After the scene fades away completely, a photo of Ganryu in the position that he was previously in can be seen.

[edit] Tekken Tag Tournament

Ganryu presents Michelle with flowers. Disinterested, she walks away. The camera gives an extreme close up of Ganryu's disappointed face.

[edit] Tekken 5

Ganryu finds the Forest Rejuvenation Data that Julia has lost, and when he hands it back to her, he confesses his love to her—or rather, proposes to her. Unfortunately for him, Julia has already left, and he is left alone once again. He then opens his mouth in shock.

Note: This ending is one of the few in Tekken 5 that does NOT show the death of Jinpachi Mishima.
Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Tekken 5, Ganryu has a secret fifth win animation (X, O, Square, and the "Up" directional button must be held down to show this) that shows him jumping into the air, putting his hands together, and looking up to the sky. This is similar to a win animation used by both Michelle Chang and Julia Chang. Another similarity between Ganryu and the Changs is that Ganryu has a special throw that can only be performed on Julia in Tekken 5.
  • Although sumo wrestlers are not allowed to touch the ground with any part of their body except the soles of their feet, some of Ganryu's moves require him to sit on the ground to perform them. Similarly, sumo are not allowed to strike with a closed fist, a rule which Ganryu actually does follow.
  • Ganryu shares some of his moves with Kuma/Panda and the Jacks. But Ganryu's moves were differentiated from those fighters in Tekken 5. However, they still share some similar moves.
  • Ganryu's Tekken sub-boss is Yoshimitsu. His Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament sub-boss is Michelle Chang. His Tekken 5 sub-boss is Julia Chang.
  • In one of Lili's interludes for Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Lili flirts with Ganryu for a moment, saying that he has robust eyebrows that are just like her father's.
  • Ganryu makes an appearance in Tekken: The Motion Picture as Heihachi Mishima's bodyguard. He also fights Michelle Chang, and loses to her.
  • Ganryu has a special animation preluding his fight against Jinpachi Mishima, in which he claims to be one of "only 36 Yokozunas" to ever exist. However, text at the top right corner of the screen reads: "Not like Ganryu is a Yokozuna rank."
  • In Tekken, Ganryu's voice is the same voice as Jack's voice.
