Gandhidham is a city and a municipality in Kutch district in the state of Gujarat, India. The town came about or more aptly created after development of the port of Kandla, 14 kms away in 1960.The growth of this town has been linked by an ambilical cord to the growth of the port of Kandla. The town is a well planned one with wide straight roads and neatly designed cross-roads.The city was devastated during the earthquake of January 2001 when many of its buildings were razed to the ground. It has since recovered with remarkable resilience which is a hallmark of the Kutchis who live in this region. With the booming growth in India's economy, the cargo handled by the port of Kandla has increased manifold and this is very visible in the economy in and around the town.In addition many industries have been set up in this region after January 2001 due to the tax incentives which were granted to the district for speedy recovery from the earthquake.Though there has been an exponetial growth in Gandhidham the medical facilities available in this town just about makes the grade.A remarkable improvement has been the availability and quality of drinking water due to the Narmada project and has almost eliminated the chronic shortage of water that this region was traditionally associated with.Whole credit of ending water shortage goes to H R Gadhavi, mayor of Gandhidham, whose enourmous efforts and skills to communicate with Water supply ministry made possible solution of water problem which was assumed impossible by previous administrators.
