[edit] Plot Synopsis
After Shawn springs Gus from a corporate retreat he must then investigate the attack of a tennis player and prove the police's suspect is innocent before the true criminal finishes the tennis player off.
[edit] Allusions
- The episode title refers to the phrase "game-set-match," which indicates the final victory in a tennis match.
- Shawn mentions former World No. 1 tennis player Björn Borg when Deanna Sirtis goes missing.
- Shawn claims that spirits can be bashful, grumpy, sleepy, dopey, and sneezy, naming off five of the seven dwarfs.
- Shawn owns a Whitesnake t-shirt, and Gus owns an Airwolf windbreaker (which Shawn stole to prevent Gus from wearing it, citing that the only human alive with an Airwolf windbreaker is Jan-Michael Vincent).
- Shawn quotes Tommy Lee Jones's famous "hard-target search" speech from the Fugitive, and in classic fashion, mixes in references to the HBO reality series Cathouse, the restaurant chain Waffle House, and the 1983 Pete Walker horror-comedy House of the Long Shadows as well as House which comes on after Psych.
- Shawn mentions the 1960's Rod Serling anthology series the Twilight Zone.
- Through-out the episode, Gus constantly alludes to 'breaking the fourth wall', jealous of how everyone besides him gets to say snappy remarks.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
- The resolution of the episode breaks S. S. Van Dine's fourth commandment for writing detective stories.
