[edit] Academics

Galena's academic program has been noted by Newsweek as one of the top 500 high schools in the country, ranking at 474th [1] out of the entire nation.

[edit] AP Classes

Advanced Placement classes are taken by students at Galena in their junior and senior years. The classes have very high pass rates on the AP exams when compared to the rest of the school district, and many students take the AP classes at Galena because of the high quality of the education.

The following Advanced Placement classes are available at Galena:

* - The AP European History class was cut at the end of the 2005-2006 school year, although in theory someone could still take the test at Galena in May. The class is now offered for the 2007-2008 school year.

[edit] Athletics

Since its founding in 1992, Galena has gone on to win either a league, regional or state championship in every sport played at the school. The Grizzlies belong to the High Desert League of Nevada's Northern 4A Region.

  • Basketball

The 2007 Grizzlies boys basketball team brought home the school's first state championship with a 54-51 win over Mojave High School of North Las Vegas. The game, which gave Northern Nevada back-to-back state titles for the first time in over 60 years (the Reno Huskies won the 2006 championship), was played at the Orleans Arena inside the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on February 23, 2007.[2] After winning the state championship, junior forward Luke Babbitt verbally committed to play Division I NCAA basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes, beginning with the 2008-2009 season.[3]

  • Football

Galena's football program was notorious for their terrible record for nearly the first decade of the school's history existence. The Grizzlies were a regular favorite for other schools to play at their homecoming games because it usually meant an easy victory for the home team. In 2000, however, a turning point was reached as Galena reached the playoffs for the first time, losing to the South Tahoe Vikings in the first round. In 2001, the Grizzlies recored their first winning season, going 7-4 and winning a first round playoff game against Hug High School. In 2002, the Grizzlies recored another 7 win season but still failed to make the 2nd round of the playoffs. This season was followed by two down years, though Galena defeated the then #1 ranked team in Northern Nevada, Bishop Manogue, on a last second 56-yard field goal.

After that, Galena did progressively better until the record-breaking 2006 season, when Galena once again defeated football powerhouse Manogue to take the Regional Championship. Although defeated by the Las Vegas Wildcats in the State Championship Game, the football team had managed to achieve what none of their predecessors could do.

With a Galena win in early October, the 2006 season also marked the end of the McQueen Lancers' uninterrupted string of victories against the Grizzlies that had dated back to 1992.
