Talk:Gaius Octavian (character of Rome)

[edit] The battle of Munda
In the comparison you mention that Octavian was not present at the battle of Munda. However, the Wikipedia entry indicates that Octavian was in charge of the Cavalry at the rear.
Just wondering what sources are used for each, and whether entries should be corrected (but which ones?), or the conflicting versions mentioned?
- I took my information from Augustus, Godfather of Europe by Richard Holland, but I've just double checked. Suetonius and Dio Cassius are both ambiguous about whether Octavian did any fighting at Munda, and neither Appian nor Plutarch mention his presence at all. Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology [1] says "Whether he arrived in Caesar's camp in time to take part in the battle of Munda or not is a disputed point, though the former seems to be more probable", and cites only Suetonius and Dio Cassius. It seems Holland was overstating his case a bit, but I don't know where the editors of the Battle of Munda page got their information that he commanded cavalry from. I'll revise this page and do a bit more digging. --Nicknack009 18:32, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
I just read in Matthias Gelzer biography of Caesar (Caesar. Politician and Statesman, Harvard University Press 1997, pag 299) that Octavian (then G. Octavius) joined Caesar's headquarters in Spain in May 45 BC, while the battle of Munda was on March 17. Caesar remained in Spain until about June. Mark Antony joined him in Narbo (France) while Caesar and Octavian were on their way back to Italy. Gelzer quotes Plinius Natural History and Strabo for Caesar's trip back to Italy and mainly the bellum Hispanum and Dio Cassius for the battle of Munda. Gelzer's book is widely considered the most authorative Caesar's biography, based on a deep study of all available sources and reporting all available datails (he took particular care to report dates of even minor events). If he states that Octavian joined Caesar only in May I would definitely trust him. --Calabrian 19:18, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Infobox
I corrected some information in the infobox.
- I removed his father's name. To begin with, his father isn't a character on Rome and secondly the link was to the real biography of the real Augustus' father. This is fiction!
- I added Timon as an ally.
- I removed both Atia and Octavia as allies and this should be common sense. Naturally they would be allies unless they were enemies, in which case, that would be noteworthy.
- Finally there was a missing line break and I fixed that too.

[edit] NPOV and too many plot points
There were some serious NPOV issues, and I worked on those, but also there were missing links and general grammar issues as well. One thing I noticed for certain is that the character information is relying too heavily on plot points of the show. The idea of a character page is to give encyclopedic information about that character. Would anyone like to work on this with me? I see that this character is not alone, but most Rome characters are written this way as well. I'm more than happy to have volunteers. MagnoliaSouth | Talk 22:43, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
