Gail Leery is the wife of Mitch Leery. The two were college sweethearts and married after four years of dating. They tried for several years to get pregnant, and just when they thought about giving up, Gail became pregnant with their first child. She gave birth to Dawson Leery on March 14, 1983. Fifteen years later, Gail works as a newswoman for Capeside's local news channel. She begins having an affair with her co-anchor, Bob (Season 1) and she and Mitch split up for several months. Mitch moves out, while Gail takes a job in New York. Eventually, Gail and Mitch divorce.

Over the next three years, Mitch and Gail reunite and are remarried at the end of Season 3. In Season 4, Gail begins experiencing flu-like symptoms and soon discovers that she's pregnant with hers and Mitch's second child. Nine months later, Gail gives birth to a daughter, whom she names Lillian Leery, in honor of Joey Potter's deceased mother, with whom she was friends.

Later, Gail convinces Dawson to move out and into Grams' attic with his girlfriend, Jen Lindley. Meanwhile, Gail is left to care for Lily. She becomes friends with a man named Nathan, a single father of a little girl named Hayley.

In 2008, Gail marries for the second time, and everyone gathers at the Leery household to commemorate the ocassion.
