[edit] "Retired"

I saw your edit summary of "Retired" pop up on my watchlist and feared you were leaving the project. Glad to see it's your job from which you've retired, and that (I assume) you'll be staying with Wikipedia! — Knowledge Seeker 00:20, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

I will still be active on Wikipedia. For the next couple of months, I'll be a part-time student and so have more spare time than I used to, but I probably won't be editing more than previously. From March next year, I'll be a full time student, and may have to reduce my involvement here, but I don't think I'll ever quit.-gadfium 01:40, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

Happy retirement! Of course, it sounds like you have plenty planned to keep you busy. You retired from the job, but not from life. Oh, how I envy you. When you become a full-time student, just remember -- leave a question at the reference desk and we'll do your homework for you.  ;-) SWAdair | Talk 18:37, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely "happy retirement!" Jump on the next plane to Fiji. BTW, thanks for weighing in on Wiki brah. The tenuous threads of my sanity have completely unraveled. Two weeks of this is more than enough. - Lucky 6.9 03:50, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

Many thanks for the support...again... on the "Wiki brah" saga. Took a lot of soul-searching at first, but he sure made it easy later with those "Weird Harold" notes of his on the RfC. - Lucky 6.9 05:21, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for correcting my misstakes... but shouldn't Stalin be removed from the mass murderer cat too... ? 80.217.161.77

Certainly, I must have missed that one. Thanks for pointing it out.-gadfium 18:56, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Almost Certainly No Viruses

--User Talk: Felix Frederick Bruyns Thank you, I have quite come to the same conclusion. Sorry for taking up the village pump's time.

[edit] Category:British Hills by Height

I basically found no way of reformating the index from 1 character to the whole (4 digit) year. It would probably require a change to the wiki source code, and that is unlikely so happen quickly.

However the categorys Category:British Hills by Height and Category:Mountains by Elevation (km) appear (in my opinion) to be liked by the actual mountain contributors. Can I tempt you to make a contribution/comment here to save (or otherwise) these pages?: Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2005 September 1#Category:Mountains_by_Elevation_(km) and its subcategories

¢ NevilleDNZ 04:17, 4 September 2005 (UTC) ¢

I've voted in response to your suggestion, although not as you may have wished. It seems to me that categorisation of dates or heights or anything which requires more than one character of indexing is not productive at present. If mediaWiki changes to allow multi-character indexes, then the issue could be revisited.-gadfium 04:32, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Move request

Hi gadfium. Would you be able to move Talk:August 2005 in Australia and New Zealand back to Talk:Current events in Australia and New Zealand? I accidentally moved it there when archiving. It seems I'm having a bad week with moves :( Thanks in advance, --Cyberjunkie | Talk 15:09, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

Done. This didn't require any admin powers, since there was only a redirect to the page being moved at its destination. It has left a redirect at Talk:August 2005 in Australia and New Zealand, but that's not a bad thing.-gadfium 19:47, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Category: British Hills by Height and Category:Mountains by_Elevation (km)

I am posting this to all the particants of the Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Category:Books by title discussion and debate. (Where the categories were voted for deletion).

This earlier discussion has been cited as an example as to why the category Category:Mountains by Elevation (km) (and sub cats) should be deleted.

Could you please take a look at the following CFD and vote. Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 September 1#Category:Mountains by Elevation (km) and its subcategories

A complication could be that Category: British Hills by Height seems be to liked by the actual British Hills content contributors. By contrast the category Category:Mountains by_Elevation (km) is not liked by User:RedWolf who seems to be a major Mountain page contributor.

Special note: the Ocean trenches by depth categories were added after the all of the people had voted. But frankly these have no real contributors and would probably get deleted if another vote was taken. You should specifically mention these to ensure there is no confusion in future.

ThanX ¢ NevilleDNZ 11:02, 6 September 2005 (UTC) ¢

Maybe you will be interested to vote on the CFD for that category. Just go here. - Darwinek 12:47, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] NZ Election campaign in Current Events

Actually for those of us that do not live in New Zealand we would not be quick to check the news page you referenced. That New Zealand is holding an election is actually news for those of us outside New Zealand because our local news will never probably mention one word about it. That does not mean that it is non news worthy or unimportant. I say this all gently to you, too. While I suspect that perhaps the tie in of the election may be not to some peoples liking for parochial reasons, the tie in to the Opposition candidate is what is popping up as the lead story on the web from New Zealand at this time, and thus becomes the platform for the underlying Strength of the story which is that something important is going on in New Zealand at the moment and that is the election. Newswriters who check English Current Events will find the item useful. However, I would be verrrry comfortable if you chose to replace the story with another story related to the election that you are more comfortable with. But I did note that a New Zealander did actually improve the terminology in my first cut and thought it newsworthy enough to retain. This is where I am coming from, and it is good to meet you. Kyle Andrew Brown 04:35, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

The main article on the New Zealand general election, 2005 is already linked from Current events and has been for many months. It's in the Upcoming elections section in the sidebar, but most people don't look at that.
The result of the election will certainly be on Current events, and also on Template:In the news on the front page unless some very major world crisis is going on at the same time. The election campaign itself is not really worthy of international news, and we must also try to be unbiased. If we publish a story on one party leader's embarrassment, we should publish similar stories about other leaders, should they be appropriate (for example, the Helen Clark motorcade trial). I try to achieve this balance on the Australia/New Zealand current events page, and on the New Zealand wikiportal page. Although I have quite strong political views of my own, I'd like to think you couldn't readily identify them from my coverage of the election campaign (you could do so from some of the other stories and articles I've covered/written over the last year).-gadfium 05:16, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

Yep, I figured that the reference to a campaign upset drew your attention, and I totally am in agreement with you on balance, if you say one thing about one side, then there is the other side as well. I did carefully not in MY original content name the relgious group. Oh, and you are so right, I NEVER saw the link to New Zealand that you say is there, which all goes to my hoping that the election does indeed make it to the Current Events English page in the position that I put my content. It is my understanding that you will indeed put in the Current Event English news space where I put the story your own coverage in the closing days of the campaign - - because it will be unnoticed by those not regularly attuned to your editorial work elsewhere. I still think newswriters outside the region would benefit from a story on the campaign now so they start thinking about tracking the story and hopefully giving it some traction.

So, on that basis, if you still feel the story is inappropriate because it does not have the balance that New Zealanders would editorially prefer, by all means delete it. But do understand that it's deletion in the absence of a story will remove it from the radar screen outside the region in this forum, because, as you said, outside the region the page you regularly work on is unknown.

The bottom line is I am dedicated to increasing the awareness of news events in New Zealand and Australia in this forum and making it accessible for readers to stumble on the content.Kyle Andrew Brown 05:30, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RfA

Thanks for your support on my RfA...but: wouldn't that be a +3 blocking mop of smiting, +6 against vandals ;). I'll try to be good Lectonar 10:47, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome pages

Sorry for the inconvenience. I thought a disambiguation page with one irrelavent link, one link, and one "see also" was pretty pointless, but if it's not wikipedia policy to redirect the way I did, then sorry 'bout that! --Icarus 20:14, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Thank you very kindly for your support for my nomination. I promise your trust will not be misplaced; I may occasionally be slightly buzzed with power, but never drunk. ;) · Katefan0(scribble) 22:19, September 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Election

My political views are similar to yours, by the sounds of it, but my vote was different. I'm a former Labour Party member (and still occasionally get invited to events like last night), but this time I voted Green because it looked like a few votes might be the difference between them reaching the threshold or not. Grutness...wha? 08:15, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

In retrospect, a very wise decision. They have only just scraped in, but with some luck Nandor might also get a seat. I hope he does, although my personal experience with him has been unpleasant. Onco_p53 09:54, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

I will let you know if ever I'm up north - not that that happens that often (last time was in '01). Cheers. Grutness...wha? 03:22, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RE: VOTE!! - HDI in country infobox/template?

Hi! I noticed your removal of this on the Wikipedia:Talk_page; I placed this notice to vote on any pages where human development issues/HDI may be relevant (usually, but not exclusively, where links are present) and -- as well -- on the Wikipedia:Talk_page, as the HDI (on the Country template page) was challenged as not being 'information' (or relevant); maybe that's obtuse and if I erred, I apologise. My purpose is is to garner as wide -- and relevant -- a consensus as possible to support or deny the HDI's inclusion in the infobox. Make sense? Thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony 03:41, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New New Zealand Photos

You mentioned using one of my photos on the New Zealand portal page. I've finished adding the obvious ones I could think of, but will spend time following links to see if I can find aother articles for which I may have an appropriate picture. Here's where I've added pictures so far:

Auckland Cape Reinga Coromandel Peninsula East Cape Fumarole Hawera Hokianga Kerikeri Kiwifruit Maori politics Mount Ruapehu Muriwai Māori culture Napier, New Zealand Rotorua Sweet potato Taipa-Mangonui Taranaki Tarawera River Te Wairoa Tongariro National Park Waitangi Waitomo District Wellington Whakaari/White Island Whakatane Whanganui River

In some cases I've added two or three photos. I think Mount Ruapehu, Whakaari/White Island, Cape Reinga, Coromandel Peninsula, Napier, New Zealand (of the three I added, I like the one of the bank interior best) and Whakatane are the better of the lot. But use whichever you like. JShook | Talk 12:14, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Aww, I never knew you cared. Thanks for the revert, I was just testing out Cool Cat's vandalism monitor on IRC (and I'd sort of hurried off and did something else and forgot about the edit). --fvw* 00:23, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

I thought it had to be something like that. I wasn't sure whether I should leave a test template on your talk page :-) -gadfium 03:09, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Visual Basic Classic wikibook

I see you have contributed to the Visual Basic article on Wikipedia. Any chance you would like to join in editing the wikibook: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Programming:Visual_Basic_Classic? --Kjwhitefoot 08:14, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

My involvement with that article was in Nov last year removing an external link to a programmer's forum which was not the most active for that programming language. Although I have an interest in business basics, that doesn't extend to VB, and my experience over the last decade has been almost exclusively with C++. I must decline your invitation.-gadfium 08:37, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

==Who's RfA== Thank you for supporting my masters RfA. He appreciates your support and comments and looks forward to better serving Wikipedia the best he can. Of course I will be doing all of the real work. He would have responded to you directly, but he is currently out of town, and wanted to thank you asap. Thanks again. --Who's mop?¿? 21:05, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
