Gabrielino Trail
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gabrielino Trail is a 28-mile (45 km) multiuse National Recreation Trail that runs through the Angeles National Forest with trailheads at Windsor Avenue in La Canada Flintridge, CA on the west end and Chantry Flat Fire Station, just north of Arcadia, CA, on the east.
The trail winds its way from Chantry Flat, through Big Santa Anita Canyon past Sturtevant Falls, through Newcomb Pass and West Fork Campground, and up to Red Box . It continues on to the Commodore Switzer Trail Camp, Oakwilde and Gould Mesa Campgrounds, and down the Arroyo Seco to Altadena and La Canada Flintridge.
At the West Fork Campground, it intersects the Silver Moccasin Trail.
Going from Altadena to Chantry Flat, one will cross NiƱo Picnic Ground, Oakwilde Wilderness Campsite, Comodore Switzer Wilderness Campsite, Switzer Wilderness Campsite, Red Box Gap (Forest Service Station; never did see it open, though), and then, in succession of about 12mi intervals: Valley Forge, West Fork, and Devore Wilderness Campsites. A quick and rather steep climb from Devore leads to Newcomb Pass from whence one descends to Chantry Flat, completing one of, if not the, most satisfying trots through the Angeles Forest. This a walk that all levels of walkers can undertake, although the less fit and/or experienced may wish to attempt the hike in three days (camping at Switzer and West Fork) while the quicker walker can enjoy the trail in two days, camping at Valley Forge. Great weather in winter to hike and most excellent in Autumn, which is the best month in that part of the forest. Beware of hiking during early Spring or after a sizable rain as the trail crosses over streams (Arroyo Seco and West Fork of the San Gabriel River) multiple times.
