The Gabilondo Ruby is a semi-automatic pistol manufactured by the Spanish firm of Gabilondo. First manufactured in 1914, the pistol was bought in large numbers through contracts with the French government and Italian government. Despite the low quality, demand was so great that the company had to sub-contract the manufacturing out to other companies. The high volume of sales due to demand has been attributed to The Great War. The 7.65 x 17 mm (.32 ACP) caliber model was discontinued in 1919 however a 6.35 mm (.25 ACP) caliber model continued in production with the same name for long period of time.
Disadvantage of the pistol was that it was too large and heavy for its caliber and it was not accurate. The small caliber combined with a relatively slow muzzle velocity gave the pistol little stopping power. That so many different factories produced the pistol, meant that most parts were not interchangeable, not even magazines.
