Gabbeh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabbeh is a traditional design of Persian carpet.

A gabbeh carpet is a triple hand-knotted carpet crafted almost exclusively by women from Qashqai tribes in southwestern Iran. This kind of carpet is much thicker than other Persian carpets, sometimes as much as one inch in depth. Its pattern is of a very basic kind with only a limited number of decorative, mostly rectangular objects resembling mainly animals. The carpets are usually light colours like yellow and red. They are made of natural wool and all the colours are natural dyes. Due to its relative ease of production (less precise pattern, small number of knots per sq cm) a Gabbeh carpet is one of the cheaper carpets compared with any other similar quality and size Persian carpet.
