Gösta Berlings saga (film)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gösta Berlings saga (in English: The Saga of Gosta Berling, Gosta Berling's saga or The Story of Gosta Berling) is a 1924 Swedish silent film classic directed by Mauritz Stiller, starring Lars Hanson (in the title role as Gösta Berling), Gerda Lundequist (as the Major's wife) and with Greta Garbo in her native break-out role on film.

The film is based on the 1891 debut novel by the Swedish author and Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf.

In 2005 the film was given a celebrated beautiful new score by pianist and silent film music composer Matti Bye. In 2006 the film was for the first time released internationally on DVD on KINO (supported by the Swedish Film Institute); with translated subtitles in English and in its full restored original length (and with the new music score by Bye).
