First appearance

In the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the fyrefly is an insect-like creature from the Elemental Plane of Fire. It resembles a large dragonfly, only completely made out of fire.

Fyreflies are commonplace on the Elemental Plane, but often emerge into the Material Plane in fiery, volcanic caves. Fyreflies attack by landing on what they want to attack and spontaneously combusting, causing instant fire damage. This is rarely damaging when only a single fyrefly does it, but one angered fyrefly typically annoys the whole swarm it belongs to (they are nearly always found in swarms), and then they all come and do it, and then the effects can become cataclysmic. They are usually peaceful, however.

Fyreflyes cannot speak, and they are neutral in alignment.

[edit] Fyreflyes in other media

Spontaneously combusting, small, insect-like creatures made out of light and fire feature in the Disney animated movie: Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The creatures are never named, however, and as it is not known in which source the creatures first appeared, it cannot be determined, of the game or the movie, which inspired which.
