Talk:Fuvammulah (Fua Mulaku)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I propose that we decide on a consistent spelling for the name of this island because there seems to be a lot of variations. The official website of the island is spelled 'Fuvahmulah', the article title is 'Fuvammulah' and inside the article it was spelled in various manners (which I corrected). --Fizan

Fuvammulah is used in atolls ministry website [1]. I think we should follow the naming convention used in their site and assume it to be "official"? As for the variations, several redirection pages can be created and then redirected to the article. Incase if anyone needs help with redirection, check Wikipedia:Redirect --Oblivious 13:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Nyaviyani Atoll?

I am from Nyaviyani Atoll.

I think thats not Nyaviyani Atoll. Its Ghaviyani Atoll. The short form is Gn. Gn.Fuvahmulah (like B.Eydhafushi).

thanks

I think you meant Gnaviyani. Yeah this is how they used int Atolls website. But its real phonetic equivelant should be Ñaviyani Atoll. Since Atolls website uses Gnaviyani and is considered official, I will be moving the page to this title and bring necessary changes. --Oblivious 21:39, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Consistency is not Necessary

There is no need for a consistent spelling. The main reason is that when writing in the Latin script, Fua Mulaku is much nicer, more traditional. H.C.P. Bell used it, The Navigational Admiralty Charts used it, and so it is more well known internationally. Besides the name Fuvammulah looks very very ugly. Names that are beautiful like Manila, Dubai, Java, Rome, Tokyo, Sydney, don't have double letters. Also in Male' they don't spell it Maale, as it should be. They write Male'. They don't want to have the double-lettered 'Maale'. Have you noticed that? So why should we be asked for consistency in Fua Mulaku if the Capital of the Maldives is not preaching with the example? Is anyone writing Maale? So when and if they begin to do so, we will write the ugly Fuvammulah name.Mohonu 08:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mohonu (talkcontribs) 08:35, 22 March 2007 (UTC).

Ugly Fvammulah? heh? Mohonu my man, what have you got against this island (if you have anything against it, that is)? --Oblivious 10:08, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

The island is not ugly. The name written in latin looks ugly. In Male' they have that natty looking name with the little tick over the 'e'.Mohonu 12:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Population Figure

does anybody think that the population figure mentioned in the atricle should be changed from 7642 (according to planning.gov.mv ) to 10270 (according to atolls.gov.mv)? It seems that government ministries differ on the figure. The reason I think that this figure should be changed is, even 6 years ago, the population figure of this island was around 7000. Also, local media including TVM, Haveeru News and Aafathisnews mention in their articles/reports that the po;ulation of this island is more that 10000.
