Furuichi Kōi (古市公威1854-1934) was a civil engineer, the president of Kōka Daigaku (工科大学)[1].
In 1854 (安政1) he was born as a son of Huruichi Takashi (古市孝) who was Himego clan’s (姫路藩士) member in Edo (江戸). In Meiji 2, he enter Kaisei-jyo (開成所), in Meiji 3, he was elected student on scholarship in Himego han (姫路藩=Himego clan), and enter Daigaku Nankō (大学南校=South School), then studied abroad to Central des Arts et Manufactures in Paris as the Ministry of Education first student studying abroad. In Meiji 12 (1879), he graduated it and got the degree of the BE, in same year entered the Faculty of Science of Université de Paris, in 1889 graduated it got Bachelor of Science, and went home and took up a post as Naimusho Doboku-kyoku Yatoi (内務省土木局雇い=The interior ministry engineering works bureau).In 1881 (明治=Meiji 14), he became the University of Tokyo lecturer and after that, he concurrently held the posts of the university teacher with the bureaucrat technical expert. In 1886 (明治=Meiji 19), when he was 32 olds, he was installed in Koka Daigaku (工科大学=the institute of technology) which was the forerunner of Tokyo Daigaku Kougakubu (東京大学工学部)the University of Tokyo engineering department ) first president, in 1888 was received the degree of the first Kougaku Hakushi(工学博士=Doctor of Engineering) and in 1894 (明治=Meiji 27) was installed in the first engineering works Doboku Gikan (土木技監=Vice-Minister for Engineering Affairs) in Naimusho.He attempted to improve an engineering works public administration and established Doboku Hōki (土木法規=an engineering works law).His typical services include the construction of Yokohama-ko (横浜港).He contributed to improve the reputation of the engineering technology in Japan in the world as the first chairman in Nihon Kougakkai (日本工学会=Japan Federation of Engineering Societies).

  • Mishima Yukio(三島由紀夫)’s real name was Hiraoka Kimitake (平岡公威) and his father namede Kimitake. His grandfather was naimu kanryo (内務官僚=a domestic affair of state bureaucrat) and and was indebted to Furuichi, by such a reason Yukio was named Kimitake.
  • While studying abroad in France, he was advised by an aunt in the boardinghouse to take a day off. He answered "Japan was delayed 1 day when I rested for 1 day ".
  • Kimitake Furuichi's statue is on just the left in the front gate in University of Tokyo Hongo premises (本郷構内) , entering.
