Funny Games is the American remake of the 1997 Austrian thriller of the same name. Original writer/director Michael Haneke (Caché and La Pianiste) wrote and directed, and Australian actress Naomi Watts plays role of Anne originally played by Susanne Lothar and Tim Roth plays George. The two malevolent young men are to be played by Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt. The projected American release date is scheduled for fall of 2007.

[edit] Controversy

Haneke is a rather vocal critic of what he sees as a prevailing falseness and superficiality in news media, broadcast television, and American cinema. If the film, now in post-production, follows the original screenplay closely, Funny Games will contain scenes of disturbing, implied violence and antisocial behavior. Many of Haneke's previous films have similar content, perhaps most notably the family in The Seventh Continent, which flushes money down the toilet, and the protagonist of Benny's Video, killing an acqaintance merely to see what it feels like. Critics and admirers may have been surprised by the announcement that Haneke was to remake Funny Games in the US, since it may seem out of character for an auteur and a cashing-in on the critical success of his films in Europe. It remains to be seen if Haneke can find success in bringing his unique voice and considerable film technique to American audiences.
