Funky Monks is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1991 album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It is the fourth song on the album and has a very Western yet still funky riff. The song is about five minutes long and has two breakdowns from the original riff. The chorus is sung in a very high-pitched fashion by John Frusciante. This is the only song ever recorded by Flea with a 5-string bass. The song may be a reference to the recording process for the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, in that the band members (excluding Chad Smith, who left every night) were secluded in a house by themselves, literally living like monks who played music using elements from the funk genre. It was played twice on the Stadium Arcadium World Tour, one being released as a b-side to the single, Desecration Smile.
