Funeral are a Norwegian funeral doom band formed in 1991 and are known as one of the pioneers to spawn the funeral doom genre. In 1993 the band recorded their first demo, entitled Tristesse, later in 1994 released as a mini CD by an American record label. According to the official Funeral website this demo caused them to recive the title of "the most depressing band in the world". Funeral then made a decision to turn more symphonic and the end result was shown on their demo Beyond All Sunsets. In 1994 the band recruited a female vocalist, Toril Snyen, and became known as one of the first doom metal bands to do so. 1995 saw the release of their album Tragedies, probably one of Funeral's more known albums. In the same year, they parted with Toril Snyen.

In the next year they went to England and recorded 10 tracks at Academy Studios without vocals (because of their loss of their vocalist) and worked with such bands as My Dying Bride, Anathema and Cradle of Filth. Later the band recruited Sarah Eick as their female vocalist and the band ended up finishing 5 of the 10 tracks they recorded at Academy Studios and the end result was To Mourn Is a Virtue in 1997. The 5 track demo CD is very rare as there were only a few copies distributed to record companies, radio stations and serious "Zines" world wide.

Again the band had to part with their vocalist. However, they quickly found a replacement and Hanne Hukkelberg was placed on the line-up as she had a good education of music and was suitable for the band. Funeral produced another demo in 1999 entitled The Passion Play and it is once again rare as it was only distributed to record labels, radio stations and "zines". 2002 was the year in which they released their album In Fields of Pestilential Grief through Italian label Nocturnal Music.

2003 was a tragic year for Funeral as their bassist/songwriter Einar Frederiksen committed suicide in January and the band went into disarray for the rest of the year.

On October 28, 2006, Funeral guitarist Christian Loos was found dead in his home.
