my most common wiki activities are:

• counter vandalism: vandalism damages not only the usefulness of wikipedia, but its credibility as well. i believe that, accustomed as we are to a world of hierarchy, authority and control, vandalism is the invetible byproduct of presenting people with freedom to edit any article. what wikipedian has not, upon explaining the principle of open collaboration to a friend, not had that friend reply "then what's to stop me replacing content with garbage?" in a world full of rules and their enforcers, people have a hard time distinguishing freedom from license. wikipedia becomes the outlet for acts of petty rebellion in an increasingly regimented world. to help preserve wikipedia as the glorious free-for-all that it is, and to prevent it from turning to an authoritarian 'solution' to the problem of defacement, i invest a lot of effort in counter-vandalism work. i focus primarily on recent change patrolling of anonymous ip edits because i value aononymity as the cornerstone of a free society, and hold the belief that counter-vandalism is best served with the attitude of a janitor, not a cop.
• citation hunting: un-referenced material, anecdotal "evidence", original research and "common sense" run rampant through wikipedia. this material decreases the usefulness of wikipedia and has done significant damage to the project's credibility. wikipedia is an encyclopedia and, as such, exists as a summation of established and documented fact -- statements must, in short, be sourced. i devote a significant amount of my wiki time to hunting down credible references for unsourced material. i never insert a {{fact}} tag without first making a reasonable effort to find a source and think wikipedia would be a better encyclopedia if others did likewise.
• new material: although wikipedia has been around long enough that all the topics deserving of an article should already have one, i do occasionally find a glaring omission. in those cases, i try my hand at some writing (although i admit i find it hard to remember the capital letters!) i have also done a few rewrites of some articles that i feel have deserved a more dilligent hand.

call me an idealist (to which i'll respond: if you're not an idealist, you're an underachiever), but i believe firmly in the ability of people to work together co-operatively and to self-govern in an environment of nearly unfettered freedom. wikipedia is perhaps the largest single example of this sort of self-organization. so here i am.

there is a popular theory that the vast majority of vandalism could be avoided if anonymous editing were disallowed. the counter to this is the assertion that anonymity is a key component of wikipedia and that positive contributions from anonymous users far outweigh vandalism. in light of this debate, i kept an informal tally of anonymous contributions i come across in my daily vandal-cleaning efforts from june 12 to august 15 2006. the tally was:
