Frogn is a municipality in the county of Akershus, Norway.

[edit] Geography

Frogn is located at the southern part of the peninsula between main Oslofjord and Bunnefjorden. It borders Nesodden, Ås and Vestby. Drøbak is the centre of Frogn.

[edit] The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Frogn (Norse Fraun), since the first church was built here. The name must be very old, and the meaning is unknown. One theory is that it is derived from the Norse word frauđ n 'manure' - and the meaning would than be 'the fertilized field'.

Until 1889 the name was written "Fron".

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1988). The motive represent Oscarsborg festning.
