Fringe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- A fringe is an ornamental appendage to the border of an item, such as a flag. It originally consisted of the ends of the warp, projecting beyond the woven fabric. More commonly it is made separate and sewed on, consisting sometimes of projecting ends, twisted or plaited together, and sometimes of loose threads of wool, silk, or linen, or narrow strips of leather, or the like.
- A fringe is the front part of the hair that hangs down above the eyes. Some English-speakers, including Americans, Canadians, and Filipinos refer to a fringe as "bangs."
- The fringe is a term used to refer to non-mainstream or "fringe" theatre, where experimental forms of stagecraft are performed. The Edinburgh Fringe, one of the Edinburgh festivals, is the world's largest fringe festival.
- Fringe science is a phrase used to describe scientific inquiry in an established field that departs significantly from mainstream or orthodox theories.
- By extension, any cultural manifestation not in the mainstream can be said to be on the fringe.
- The Fringe were an indie rock band from North London in the late nineties signed to Blue Dog Records.
- Fringe is also an adjective usually used in evaluating sports prospects. A "fringe prospect" lacks the skills to be an impact player at the highest level, and "fringe" generally connotes something on the border between major league and minor league.
