Friesoythe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friesoythe is a town in the district of Cloppenburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Soeste, approx. 25 km northwest of Cloppenburg, and 30 km southwest of Oldenburg. In 1945, it is believed that allied troops (possibly Canadian soldiers) set civilian houses and a church on fire in reprisal for the death of the unit's commanding officer.[citation needed]
