Friedrich Welwitsch

Dr. Friedrich Welwitsch (1806 – October 20, 1872) was an explorer and botanist. He was born in Austria but worked elsewhere. His claim to fame came when the Portuguese government sent him to Angola, then a Portuguese colony. Here he discovered the famous Welwitschia mirabilis which was named after him.
