Your signature

Your signature makes effective use of negative space, but would you please consider selecting a more transparent one? It will make things easier for others (myself included) in the long run. Thanks. NatusRoma 01:56, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

I must not be viewing your signature correctly. It appears to me simply as two long underscores, one linking to your user page, the other to your talk page. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I'll try to figure it out. NatusRoma 02:15, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Umm, I'm pretty sure that it's meant to be that way. Even if we can't get you to change your signature, could you not use a template for it? Every time a page gets refreshed (e.g. someone looksat it) the servers have to look at an extra page (e.g. User:Freshgavin/sig). This not only adds a small but mostly pointless drain on the system, if a vandal comes and adds "Freshgavin eats figs" then this will show up everywhere you ever signed. Cheers - brenneman(t)(c) 11:58, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
  • This does appear to be a browser problem. When using IE, I can view it as it's apparently meant to be, but when I use Firefox, as I usually do, I see the two blue underscores. NatusRoma 17:42, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Agreed. I'm on IE now and it looks fine. Although I think the blanks are more interesting!

  • And now I'm Mozilla-ed and it still looks fine. - brenneman(t)(c) 12:11, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
  • As can I. Weird. I think that before, I wasn't using the most up-to-date version of Firefox. Well, sorry to bother you. NatusRoma 13:09, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

FAC/Marilyn Manson

Thanks for your input last month at Wikipedia:Peer review/Marilyn Manson. The article benefited greatly from all of those comments, and it's now a Featured Article candidate. I would definitely appreciate your vote! --keepsleeping say what 20:05, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

  • I appreciate your comments there. You brought up an interesting approach to article-writing and I think I like it. I've always kind of considered section heads as things to be basically ignored, but now that you've mentioned "repeating" their words in the section text, I can't not notice it :) Anyway, I've been making various tweaks to Marilyn Manson's prose throughout its FA process, and I'll continue to play with it, but I think your suggestions really could make it a more interesting read; I took a shot at the first paragraph already. Thanks again. --keepsleeping say what 02:08, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Pop density precision

Hi Freshgavin,

First, thanks for all the great work on Toshima! I've completed what I plan to do for almost 20 special wards and it's great to know I'm not the only one working on them.

I've noticed that the Japanese Wikipedia consistently gives areas of wards to four figures, e.g. 13.59 square kilometers. That's why I've rounded all the population densities to four figures, e.g. 13,570 (counting the 1, 3, 5, and 7). I don't think there are many circumstances when anyone would need to know them any more accurately, anyway, but if they do, they'll need a more accurate number for area. I looked on the Toshima web site but didn't see it.

Speaking of web sites, I've been deleting all the links to the special wards' Japanese web sites as I go along, provided there's an English site that has a link to the Japanese. My reasoning is that if someone reads Japanese they can get to the Japanese site either that way, or via the Japanese Wikipedia. Either way, no search is necessary.

Best regards,

Re: Welcome! and Takashi Fujii :D

Thanks for the comments on my editing of Takashi Fujii, I've changed it a bit. :D I rather skipped past and just rearranged the parts of his acting career the first time, so I didn't pay any attention to that, since I'm mainly a fan of his music more than anything. The comments about his music career being neglected, was more meant by a fan's point of view. I'm saying he didn't have a terribly large fanbase music-wise until "OH MY JULIET!" was released, at least from what I've seen, and now I'm seeing him everywhere with a new image and a sound of Tommy february6; it was probably my own opinion getting a bit sunk in. :D However, I've changed that accordingly, as well. --REMROMchild 00:04, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Kawaii

Good on you for trying to correct the Systemic Japancruftization of Wikipeda, although it's pretty clear that these efforts will be fruitless. If you're in the mood to tilt at any more windmills, check out Category:Anime_and_manga_terminology. The way things seem to be going, Wikipedia is going to end up redefining every beginner-level Japanese vocabulary word as an Anime term. よろしく!! The Crow 23:39, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Got to add my own kudos. The majority of the kawaii article is utter trash. I was starting to lose patience with one paticular user and his unwillingness (or ability) to see the difference between what is fact, what is speculation, and what is total garbage. If the article survives (I suspect it will given the passion with which many follow their hobbies) then at least we can keep on top of ludicrous POV statements and speculating (loanword? OMFG...). Barryvalder 06:27, 18 February 2006 (UTC) Should also thank you for correcting my shoddy Japanese. (^o^)/ Barryvalder 06:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Please consider adding an "affirm" vote to the Talk:Kawaii#Informal_consensus_resolution and the Talk:Kawaii#Referendum on "loanword" statement as original research/novel interpretation. Accepting as I do the unfortunate consensus of the AfD, I feel the second best thing is to set a clear standard of quality for the resulting article, and in doing so make a strong statement that it is not to be used as a free-for-all hobbyist trivia dump. I hope you feel the same and will record your affirmation on the talk page. The Crow 23:26, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

RfM

Hi Freshgavin, and thanks for the information about your request for mediation. Here's a brief explanation of why I'm bowing out on this (and name order).

Wikipedia is a fulfilling activity, despite all its rules. While "regulation creep" is regrettable, it's still possible to get a lot done without paying too much attention to such things. When I miss a macron, spell "aluminum" in the American way, or forget an en dash in a range of dates, fellow Wikipedians will change it to conform to the Manual of Style. Whether or not the change is welcome, that's hardly as bad as waking up to find the tax authorities, traffic police or yakuza at the door. Matters of style are significant, but not the main point of Wikipedia. Lately, it's been more content and less administration for me, and I feel a lot better as a result. Wikipedia is still fun after losing a battle, or a dozen.

I wish you success in the RfM, and hope you continue with Wikipedia regardless of the outcome.

"Cuteness in Japan"

I just noticed you mentioned you were talking about creating a skeleton for "Cuteness in Japan". This is just my input, but in my mind, the Kawaii article is Cuteness in Japan (This idea is the only way I can force myself to improve an article that shouldn't even be there). In fact I'd support a rename, although I don't think there is any way we would get consensus on it, at least not right now. I can foresee some problems with creating a second article... for example, what would link to it? What would kawaii become, and are you willing to fight the fight to make it that? Will you go change every "kawaii" link to "cuteness in Japan"? I can foresee the... um... extremely interested parties coming back and making accusations of creating an unnecessary POV fork. So, maybe this deserves some deeper thought before proceeding. Cheers. The Crow 17:05, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Disambig

I'm not particularly partial to the existence of the DAB. I recreated it when I noticed it red-linked when I was checking older revs of the Kawaii article to see what was being tossed around. My addition of Kawai was to get it above the two-DAB threshold (which I am still not sure that I understand the logic behind; but that's a different topic). At any rate, misspellings don't usually end in (disambiguation).  ;-) I'll PROD it, to see if anyone else actually cares. Neier 10:57, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the advice and the help with article creation. However, because I do have enough time to translate directly from Japanese Wiki, but don't have enough time to edit and stylize my work (I work from my teaching job and don't have internet at home), I will let the owarai group do the work for me. I can't even use Japanese text. It's hard enough to pop off three comedians a day as I have been doing. I do apologize for my noobiness, but I don't even have time to learn how to wiki well. But I am trying!!struggle 13:38, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Not at all offended. Any translator with experience is used to having their work edited (i.e. destroyed by Japanese men who can't speak English and don't have degrees in Japanese and English). I simply translate from window to window in the format posted because it flows VERY QUICKLY. I'm glad I get to put all this owarai out there. Japanese Macrons Mediation

I will have some preliminary questions up soon, I am looking forward to working with everyone to get this resolved. Thank you, pschemp | talk 16:20, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Japanese macrons

Freshgavin, I have very strong sympathy for your position on macrons. Even though macrons are 'correct', in most cases English practice is to ignore them. Granted that Wikipedia should do better than 'normal' practice, and granted that adding a macron can change both meaning and intelligibility entirely, my feeling is still that the 'language nuts' are pushing us further and further away from the mainstream. Apart from a parenthetical mention of the macronned form along with the kanji representation, is there really a need to riddle Wikipedia articles with macrons? That is why I've omitted macrons at my article on Yushima Seido (which will now obviously have to be changed :) ); that is, I've used Yushima Seido throughout the article, but I've added (湯島聖堂 Yushima Seidō) after the first mention so that people know what the correct writing and pronunciation are. In other words, the macronned form should be there as a reference or resource, but it shouldn't be pushed in people's faces. (Well, I guess that wouldn't always work, but the principle seems sound).

As for the view that English uses diacritics for other languages and should do the same for Japanese, well, romanisation is not the official script for Japanese, it's simply a kind of transliteration. That makes it slightly different from accents used for French or German, where we are talking about an official orthography.

However, despite my general feelings on this, I am still rather inclined to go with the other camp. The main reason is that it seems to me that history is overtaking us. Originally, romanisation used macrons: Tōkyō. Then people were too lazy to add the macrons (and couldn't see any sense in them anyway), so we got Tokyo. Those days are long gone. Now we've got a whole generation of people coming through who seem to regard macrons as an exotic old-fashioned habit; they'd much prefer to use wapuro romaji: Toukyou (if they had their way)! If abandoning macrons means that we are going to end up not with Tokyo but with Toukyou, I'll take macrons any day!

Anyway, while the "macron-in-title" advocates are fighting their battles, there are literally screeds of articles where macrons have not been added at all. I really feel that these people could devote more creative energies to fixing up those articles (or adding alternative macronless redirects to macronned titles) than fighting for the principle to impose macrons on titles. Bathrobe 12:48, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I agree with you. Tokio did come first. Although I think that Tōkyō has a much, much longer lineage than Toukyou. Like, over a century vs 10 years. I also agree with you on the use of diacritics in general. For instance, I started an article on Van Mieu in which I used diacritics (and kanji) in parentheses, but basically kept Van Mieu itself without diacritics (although I have to plead inconsistency in using diacritics in the name of a king).
In fact, I am probably more demanding than most on the use of correct script and diacritics in language (I have my own language-related website in which I always show characters in their correct form as well as diacritics for tone, length, etc.), but I just don't see the need to lumber Wikipedia articles in English with all this detail. It strikes me as being the "little learning is a dangerous thing" syndrome. In fact, I get the impression that half these people are kids still trying to learn the language!

Well, far be it for me to say anything derogatory about your Japanese ability. It's excellent. The only reason I mentioned it is because I've had it happen to me in Japan, and Japanese get really teed off when they hear it. In my translation firm, I actually got yelled at for being too into finishing my work and not saying "Otsukaresama deshita" to every single person returning home. So now I've formed somewhat of a Stockholm Syndrome with Japanese cordiality. I remember reading a quote once that said "Japanese are the only race that have mastered the art of politeness to the point that they have made it indistinguishable from rudeness." I laughed when I read that. struggle 21:48, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
You raise a valid point, however, since most owarai kombi in Japan are referred to as "manzai-shi," it just naturally came out as manzai duo. Especially since almost all comedians in Japan must learn manzai first and then gradually progress into konto. Plus "owarai" is such a nebulous term to me it seems. But I will follow your suggestion. And yes, I am absolutely the laziest writer in the world. I simply do the translation work - I know that you are very busy but all the other members can do the editing. Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/Japanese Macrons

Hi, we have a proposed solution now and need everyone's input as to whether its acceptable so the rfm can be closed. Please add your comment to bottom of the page. Thank you, pschemp | talk 17:24, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Resolution

I basically agree with your sentiment. I was tempted to break ranks, just to see if it would force any other type of resolution (see Amanojaku); but, I figured it would have just led to more rounds of discussing irrelevance. Neier 08:28, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry that I couldn't do very much more to help your position. I believe some of the issues (including macrons and other diacritics in titles) are beginning to be a Wikipedia-wide issue, though. A general proposal such as Wikipedia:Naming conventions (standard letters with diacritics) may be something we should be looking at now.--Endroit 21:48, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Freshgavin,

this is exactly what I am trying to find out, thanks for your examples. I need to find out the concrete solutions as to how two or more words can be combined to create one word. For exmple forgiveness, is there somewhere on your site that has a list of such word combinations and solution in the same way as a dictionary. 1word+2words=word3

I really appreciate the feedback and I hope my explanation was not to confusing.

Getting into conflict for me isn't fun though, I'd rather work with users not against. Let me give several examples of conflicts thrown a me (ones I havent volunteered for). One user has been opposing me on whatever article I edit, including ones related to anime or norse mythology. Same user was voting opposite to my vote whenever I vote. he even objected me recieveing anti-vandalism barnstars. Basicaly this user comes to any article I edit simply to oppose me. That "year of hell" ended on early december when finaly the user left wikipedia and me. This user or a user editing very much similar to him (almost identical to him) resurfaced early february. So, I only had a level of peace and quiet for a month or two. No other wikipedian has dealt with this kind of nonsense aside from User:RickK. There was also the MARMOT case which marmot was spoofing my IP and getting me blocked. He was getting my IP from the IRC bot of mine that detected vandalism. Same bot has been rendered useless since my ban from cvu-related chanels single-handedly by one user. That user was the closest wikipedian I had, and we supported each other in difficult times when either one of us were vunrable most. For the IRC bot detecting vandalism, I spent a great amount of time coding it and a lot of cash to keep it running. In return I only asked to be able to run it. I guess I was asking for too much.

With perhaps overwhelming stress from stuff like I mentioned above... I think I have very strong emotional control, granted I do not yet have the control of a Vulcan. I take wikipedia seriously, yes. Newspapers already use wikipedia as a referance and in the near future I believe wikipedia will be the source of all information. I want to help create such a noble project enforcing its rules and guidelines. You are however right, my dedication to wikipedia is probably not in my personal best interest, but perhaps it is in the best interest of wikipedia. After all, I get nothing in return for my contribution aside from constant harrasment from people like Davenbelle, Marmot, etc... --Cat out 11:42, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Essjay is the person "ejecting me from cvu"... yeah I know him. I consider him to be a close friend even though he treats me like the enemy or perhaps worse. I wont treat people who have shown kindness to me with hostility even if they are being hostile to me.
I am not willing to look the other way when someone is being disruptive so as to preserve my image. I find wiki-politics to be disruptive. There are many rumors about me, some quite entertaining. Especialy trolls, vandals, and other pests will always spread such nonsense about me. The failure of my RfA's (all 5 of them) should be evidence of this. I do not however jump to every dispute I get my hands on, I prefer to just "observe" many as disputes often solve themselves...
I will not ever be intimidated by threats, stalking, nor harrasment I recieve. I am more concerned about wikipedias content and integrity rather than my image/reputation. This probably means my adminship would have to wait a decade or ten...
--Cat out 13:02, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I know you are trying to help but even if I want to keep a "low-profile" I dont believe I can. I used to have an edit/mo average of 1800ish which I pulled back to 800ish (over a 50% drop). I even stoped editing anything contraversial. In return I got Moby Dick starting to do his thing... I do not believe I am driven by pride. If I had any of that, I'd have left wiki long ago. A peaceful wiki-life would be preferable but inprobable so long as people actively stalk me...
--Cat out 05:56, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Please see my proposal about the Japanese on the Wikipedia logo :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28proposals%29#To_fix_the_Japanese_tile_on_the_Wikipedia_logo

You mentioned on another page that you tried to get the Wikipedia logo creator to fix the Japanese puzzle piece, and I have made a general proposal to fix it plus the others, in order to make the symbols represent the 'W' sound in each language. In at least one case (Japanese), the puzzle piece seems to appear to have an input error ('ku' + small 'i' or 'wa' + small 'i'). As you know, these are strange (while 'ku' + small 'i' can be used to try and represent 'qui' from other languages, 'wa' + 'i' just plain looks like an input error).

If you and/or anyone else support a change, I could use more people to voice their support on the proposal page. Thanks :)

Opinion on names

On names I feel like either an English translation of the Japanese title OR the actual Japanese title in romanized characters (Nihongo no namae) should be placed first if the show does not have an official romanized title. I feel like the actual Japanese characters must be in parenthenses since they are technically not a part of the English language.

So...

  • Option A : English translation (Japanese Romanized)
  • Option B: Romanized (Japanese English translation)

Now, as for kanji, unless there is an alternate way to mention them in English, I am okay with placing them without parenthenses since individual kanji have multiple meanings. WhisperToMe 04:26, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm cool with that :) WhisperToMe 04:32, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: Fair Use image rationale

Well interpreting fair use is not my strong point. I was just commending since you seemed to be saying that since the source was labeled as "all rights reserved" it can't be fair use. If you mean the source is too unrelated and such that's another matter, but I think you should have been more spesific if that was the reason you contested it, that's all. --Sherool (talk) 12:07, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Opinion

Ummm... It is a nice essay. We want people to be bold and assume good faith and there are many of us that find Wiki Politics disruptive. There should be no consequence for vfding a (contraversial or not) article or category assuming there are valid arguments. What the essay implies (perhaps unintentionaly) is to back off when pov pushers or trolls emerge. Consider everyone giving up whenever there is a fight. We wouldn't then have a reason to have wikipedia policies. I can be cruel when criticising. Hopefully I haven't offended you with my comments above. --Cat out 10:59, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Criticism

Kawaii is indeed an excelent example. If I and others had not interfered with the vfd rather than "backing off" on the first sight of people (you in that case), the article would be deleted. Yuor "counter-response" was predictable, you have identified the article as fancruft. Your deletion attempts hasn't ended with the VfD. If I recall correctly, you were blanking sections before the vfd even concluded. All I am trying to say is just because there is overwhelming opposition on the horizon, doesn't necesarily make it right. I am not trying to be offensive, just trying to make a point.

The general attitude/atmosphere of Wikipedia is mostly hostile to anyone. I am among the people who make an effort against that. I am the person that formed the WP:CVU in hopes and intentions to deal with vandalism in an efficent and user-friendly way. I believe that project has been successful, vandals/newbies are less likely to be bitten. However the CVU costed me my "prestige", if you cycle through my failed RfA's you'll see the oppose votes for forming the CVU.

I look the other way as far as policy and rule enforcement goes. I very rarely tell people they can't do something because of policy. I almost always try to come up with arguments telling the users why something is inaporporate/necesary. Unless I feel a discussion is indeed futile (blant pov pushing or personal opinions), I pursue it. I of course try to apply the rules and policies wikipedia comunity have agreed up on but through discussion. Rules and policies are pointless and irrelevant if no one is willing to talk people to follow it. I have heard tens of explanations/interpretations of WP:NPOV, mostly to justify "pov pushing". Wikipedia policies are mostly flexible for instances when "breaking" policy is aproporate or "extending" policies coverage when aproporate.

I prefer diplomacy to wiki-law. I believe if both sides want to create a better encyclopedia rather than push their bias, a discussion is possible. What you seek is a utopia and I do not believe that is posible in an open forum such as wikipedia.

Note: Please do not omit material from my talk page. I prefer to log the entier conversation (your and my comments).

I think an actual straight answer (as per concensus, see arcives) would be more aproporate. Refering to an otaku cabal is inaproporate and is no way to refer to fellow wikipedians (myself included).
Chokaro's comment can be easily be interpreted as an invitation to a revert war. Please be sensative with your responses so as to make sure we avoid unnecesary confrontations. --Cat out 11:11, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
You were 'blaming' otaku for the existance of the Kawaii article, I find that attitude hostile and uncivil. Just because there are google hits doesnt give you the excuse to be uncivil. All I gave you was a friendly warning so that you evade a confortation with some other person (not me) which you interprted as an accusation... --Cat out 13:59, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I honestly have no idea what you are trying to say. All I have to add to my previous statement is, avoid comnnets such as Otaku own the internet etc... This chain of comments is being most unproductive. --Cat out 00:35, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Re: Kogo

Hi Freshgavin. Yes, looking back at the section, I do see that it's a bit iffy. When I wrote it I'd thought that the cited dictionary definition was enough, but obviously it wasn't described terribly well. Feel free to remove it; I'll see if I can find a definitive source. Thanks for letting me know. By the way, out of curiosity, how did you come by the conversation I was having with User:Black Carrot? —Mets501 (talk) 01:59, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Haha, OK. —Mets501 (talk) 02:33, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
