[edit] Maximum channels

Under channels, it says that we will see more channels under UHF than satellite. However, I have read/seen somewhere on a TVNZ programme such as One News or Breakfast, that the terrestrial service only supports up to 18 channels. --Danj205 12:25, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I have also seen that program, but according to [1] "The satellite platform will provide a core set of programmes to those outside the DTT coverage footprint". Also, the CBA [2] also assumes that there will be more channels. However, the picture is still blurry, so you may be right. WP 01:07, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Currently, Sky controls signals to your decoder, which means they can turn it off if you don't pay the bill. It also means the decoder is of no use to anyone else so they aren't a popular item with burglars. The FreeView signal to the FreeView box will not be able to be controlled by FreeView (same as current free to air TV) so we are going to have a brand new very attractive item for burglars. Continuing your thinking out loud: If the FreeView box isn't to be controlled by anybody, it does not need to include any kind of decryption, just decoding. Technichally, that is not too complicated, which means the box is cheap to make. Set top boxes for DVB-T, without card readers or decryption, are sold in other countries for as little as 60 NZD. That's not quite enough to be a 'very attractive item'. /Kriko 16:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

    • Mt Kau Kau - Wellington
    • Sugarloaf - Christchurch
    • Mt Cargill - Dunedin
    • Hedgehope - Invercargill
    • Mt Erin - Napier / Hastings
    • Mt Egmont - New Plymouth / Taranaki
    • Pine Hill - North Shore
  • MPEG2 for satellite, MPEG2/4 for terrestrial

Potential problems (from overseas experence):

  • Bad set top boxes (hang, crash, slow)
  • "interesting" programs like this
  • putting too many channels into one multiplex, resulting in poor quality
