The story is that he got a C on the paper he wrote at Yale not an F. In a recent Fortune article he said he couldn't actually remember what he made and that the story comes from an offhanded remark he made at some point "I was asked what grade I got on it, and I stupidly said, 'I guess I got my usual gentlemanly C.' That stuck, and it's become a well-known story because everybody likes to flout authority. But to be honest, I don't really remember what grade I got. I probably didn't get a very good one, though, because it wasn't a well-thought-out paper." Link to the Fortune article [1]

[edit] Fred's more recent personel life

Fred's current wife is Diane Smith.

Fred’s Children are;

Six daughters, Wendy Rice, Stacey Hydrick, Kathleen Smith, Molly Smith, Rachel Smith and Samantha Smith

Three sons, Richard Smith, Arthur Smith and Canon Smith

I also found this on his daughter Mrs. Wendy Rice, 35, a triathlete and marathon runner, died Tuesday in Memphis while visiting her mother, the death was in June 2005.

Rice's home was in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Cause of death was unknown. Husband was Jeffrey Scott Rice

Found this info about his son; Cannon Smith will be attending Ole Miss, his college of choice. Smith, a 6-foot, 176-pound Olive Branch High quarterback senior from Memphis, plans to sign a letter of intent during the February signing period.

Fred's Ex-wife and I assume mother of his children Linda Grisham Smith McFarland.

It is also known that Fred is a Socially Liberal Conservative. Fred is co-chair with the CEO of Waste Management on the dangers for Americas dependence on oil.

The group is known as the Energy Security Leadership Council, also called for increasing U.S. oil and natural gas exploration, saying that could add 1 million to 2 million barrels of oil per day to the nation's supply. "Republicans need to accept sensible increases in vehicle fuel efficiency standards and Democrats must be willing to allow responsible expansion of oil exploration and production," said Fred Smith,

I would like someone to verify and concur with all data provided.
