Question 2: Who invented the Zone System?
Ansel Adams.
The rec.photo FAQ also mentions Fred Archer. I am not enough of a photo historian to know of the contribution he presumably made. However, the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House lists Frederick Scott Archer (1851) as inventing critical aspects of the Collodion Process.
If this is the same person, I will leave the discussion of how Archer's contribution affected the development of the Zone System to others. It is my understanding that Adams arrived at a first critical set of principles of the Zone System somewhere between say, 1935-1945. These dates may not be accurate.
In any case, certain aspects of the Zone System are, in the end, rather arbitrary. Adams last writings (ca 1980) about it differed in several ways from the first writings.
If you are doing critical study of the history of the Zone System, please use this question/answer as a framework, not a definitive set of dates.

Maxim M. Muir added the following information on Sun, Mar 24, 1996:
Fred Archer was an instructor at the Art Center College in Los Angeles. He formed the basis of the zone system in a series of articles in the old U.S.Camera magazine that were published in the late 30's. Adams noticed these contacted Archer and went on to more formally define the current language of the zone system.
