French in the Gaspé

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaspésie French is a particular dialect of Quebec French.

[edit] Pronunciations

Like all Quebecers, Gaspisians affricate the dental stops before high front vowels, but the stress on the [i] is less pronounced than in the rest of the province [d(z)i]. Many Gaspisians pronounce a slightly different [r] than the rest of the province. Further, the English [əɹ] like the ending 'hamburger' is pronounced [œ:ʁ] (like 'sœur').

[edit] Vocabulary

Some English words were incorporated into French pronunciation by Gaspesians. Examples are: grocerie, pentré.
