French Netherlands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The French Netherlands (French: "Pays-Bas français", Dutch: "Franse Nederlanden") is a term used for the French region of Nord-Pas de Calais[1]. The region was historically a part of the Netherlands, with Douai (Dutch: "Dowaai"). The term is used increasingly used as a replacement of "Nord-Pas de Calais" (Lit. "North Strait of Dover") which, according to its inhabitants, does not sound very good. Various petitions are currently taking place in favour of the renaming and making Douai the capital once more[2].
