Freier Haufe zu Coeln e.V. is a non-commercial medieval combat reenactment group based in Cologne, Germany. The name roughly translates into "Free Company of Cologne".
The group was initiated in early December 2003 by the British reenactor Roger Martin and officially founded as a club on January 6th, 2004. After resubmitting the request several times, Freier Haufe zu Coeln became an e.V. later that year.
The group has quickly grown from its original ten founding members to a total of more than sixty fighting members as of July 2005, which makes it the largest medieval combat reenactment club in the region and one of the largest of the country. It currently participates in events across North-Rhine Westphalia and in the United Kingdom.
The Freier Haufe is also the initiator and a founding member of Zeit der Schwerter and thus shares it ruleset for semi-contact combat.
In 2004 the group received media attention when it performed a combat display at the city museum's annual festival. This has been repeated in the consequent years and will probably become a regular part of the festival's features.
[edit] Period
The Freier Haufe covers the entire 10th to 14th century and thus features Vikings and medieval soldiers alike.
[edit] Group colours
The coat of arms consists of a red and white background with a jagged transition, the upper third being red and the lower two thirds of the coat of arms being white. A rampant black griffon facing left is centered on the white area. The coat of arms is strongly based on the coat of arms of the city of Cologne.
The club's official battlefield dress is primarily black, although this is not mandatory (and widely regarded as inauthentic). The black surcoat features a red version of the griffon from the group's coat of arms.
Both, the coat of arms and the red griffon act as the club's logo.
