Freewheelin' Franklin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freewheelin' Franklin (no last name for this character has ever been given) is one of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, a trio of characters in Gilbert Shelton's underground comix.

He is drawn as tall and slender, with a large, bulb-ended nose (shaped rather like a light bulb), long, straight light-brown hair drawn back in a pony-tail extending down to the middle of his back, a waterfall moustache, and a cleft chin. He almost always wears a cowboy hat and boots, but otherwise does not dress in the more extreme counterculture styles.

He is by far the most street-smart of the Brothers, and it is intimated that, unlike the other two (who come from middle-class backgrounds prior to becoming hippies) he has been on the streets all his life. In one storyline, he meets people who may be his parents, but the question of his origins has, to date, remained unanswered.

He spends a great deal of time slouched in an old easy chair, commenting sardonically on the activities of his companions, Fat Freddy Freekowtski and Phineas Freakears. When Franklin chooses to take action, though, he is by far the most effective of the Freak Brothers—he lacks Phineas' idealism, and is considerably smarter than Fat Freddy. However, he is as fond of drugs as any of the others, and is the one who said "Dope will get one through times of no money better than money will get one through times of no dope" in an early episode.
