Freedom from Hunger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freedom from Hunger is an international charity based in Davis, California fighting hunger and poverty with innovative and sustainable self-help solutions. It is notably promoting microcredit solutions through its programme Credit with Education, supporting 320,000 borrowers with an average loan[1] of $131. The organization plans to expand to support 3 million borrowers by 2010 and has gained grant support[2] for this from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

[edit] History

Freedom from Hunger traces its history back to 1946, when the organization Meals for Millions was founded by Clifford Clinton. Separately, the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation was established following the 1960 launch of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's five year campaign, Freedom from Hunger. The two organizations merged in 1979.
