Freedom Party (Italy)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Freedom Party (Italian: Partito della Libertà) is a proposed political party in Italy. It is meant to be a merger of the various parties which were part of the Casa delle Libertà coalition in the 2006 general election. Its core will likely consist of Forza Italia, the National Alliance and the Northern League, while some other minor parties of the House of Freedoms might also join. It is considered unlikely that the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats would join, since they have started to distance themselves from the House of Freedoms and Silvio Berlusconi since the 2006 election.[1]
In January 2007, Berlusconi announced that he would prefer Gianfranco Fini, the leader of the National Alliance, to become his successor and the future leader of the Freedom Party; this was critically received both by the centre-left government and his other (former) allies, the UDC and the Northern League.[2] The Northern League even stated they would not join the Freedom Party if Fini would be the leader.[3] [4]
