Free port

A free port (porto franco) or free zone (US: Foreign-Trade Zone) is a port or area with relaxed jurisdiction with respect to the country of location. Free economic zones may also be called free ports.

Most commonly a free port is a special customs area with favorable customs regulations (or no customs duties and controls for transshipment). Earlier in history some free ports like Hong Kong enjoyed political autonomy. Many international airports have free ports, though they tend to be called customs areas or customs zones.

The Incheon Free Economic Zone(IFEZ) is focused on becoming a hub of business in the East Asia region. IFEZ follows the concept promoted by Professor Kusarda of UNC of building new cities focused around major airports. The airport cities(as the theory goes) add a new level of efficiency in the logistics of the global economy. The raison d'etre of this Free Economic Zone is that it's bang in the center of Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Taiwan(and only a few kilometers from Seoul). Added to this, the Korean telecom/data infrastructure is second to unparalleled. Vastly outpacing the US and UK, Korea rivals Japan as a "wired nation". Incheon Free Economic Zone, takes advantage of Korea's connectedness as it faces stiff competition from other regional power houses, China and Japan.
