Freddie Gruber
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freddie Gruber is a jazz master drum teacher and musician. He came up in the nascent New York be-bop scene, and gigged with Charlie Parker, among others. Making fast friends with drumming icon Buddy Rich, he observed Rich's style and technique over a long period, and ended up basing his teaching method on what he assimilated.
[edit] Students
Training students throughout his long and storied career, Gruber's student list is long and varied. It includes such drum luminaries as Neil Peart of Rush, Steve Smith of the rock group Journey, and former Chick Corea drummer Dave Weckl. Other drummers benefitting from Gruber's teaching prowess include session drummers Mike Baird, John Guerin, and Nick Vincent, Ambrosia drummer Burleigh Drummond, and Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez of the group Oingo Boingo. He took Peart under his wing and told him to forget everything he knew, all 30 years of Neil's playing experience, and taught him a clean, new way. Some say he made a huge difference in the way Neil plays.
[edit] Drum Kit
Gruber plays Yamaha drums, and though he respects all drum makers believes at this point in time Yamaha makes the best drum available.
