Freddie Goodwin

Freddie Goodwin (born June 28, 1933 in Heywood, near Rochdale, Lancashire) was an English football player. Goodwin signed as a trainee from Cheshire Schoolboys by Manchester United in 1953 and made his senior debut for the club on 20 November 1954 against Arsenal. He helped the club win the 1956 and 1957 league championships. In his United career, he scored 8 goals in 107 appearances. He was signed by Leeds United in March 1960 for £10,000. There, he broke his leg, ending his career at Leeds.

Goodwin went on to become a player-manager at Scunthorpe United. He then became a manager at the New York Generals, Brighton and hove Albion and Birmingham City. At Birmingham in the 1970s in the First Division, he had his most notable time as a manager. It was at Birmingham where he introduced the young Trevor Francis into league football.
