Fred Lavery is a music producer, writer, musician, and co-owner (with Gordie Sampson) of Lakewind Sound. He was born and raised in Cape Breton and had early career success as a singer-songwriter. In 1978 he released "Song For Noel" which became an instant hit on regional radio. In 1981 the artist's full length album “First Impressions” was released on Glencoe Records, produced by Paul Mills and engineered by Daniel Lanois. Singles “Little Children”, and “Forty Five Years” charted on national radio. A rare vocal condition called spasmodic dysphonia cut short his singing career in the mid 80’s. Lavery then enrolled in the music programe at St. Francis Xavier University to focus more on musicianship, composition and production. He has written more than 100 songs, some 40 of which have been recorded by various artists. He has produced over 30 albums and has performed with artists such as John Allan Cameron, The Cape Breton Summertime Revue, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Guthro, Gordie Sampson, Stephanie Hardy and Aselin Debison.

In 1996 Fred Lavery and Gordie Sampson founded Lakewind Sound Studios. The studio quickly became Atlantic Canada’s busiest recording facility and to date has won 7 consecutive ECMA’s and 5 MIANS Studio of the Year Awards.

In 2001 Lavery won ECMA SOCAN “Songwriter of the Year” for “Get Me Through December” a song co written with Gordie Sampson recorded by Natalie MacMaster and sung by Allison Kraus.

In 2005 Lavery won the Music Industry of Nova Scotia’s “Producer of the Year” .
