[edit] Good job.
I agree with the removal of all those influential fighting styles from JKD, the list was growing too long. What about the definition of a "combat system"? I thought it was pritty descriptive, considering that "process" is such a general term. ---Marcus- 21:34, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] JKD
There is a limited block for anons, but as someone who has actually edited the article, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to apply it. The place to go would be Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress to report excessive vandalism. The Bruce Lee pages do attract their share of enthusiastic editors, but it isn't as bad as some pages. You should check out the George W. Bush article history! There is no denying that Bruce Lee is incredibly influential, which is why we get so many editors wanting to chip in before they learn our policies about how to write a bio or martial arts article. I've got the JKD pages on my watchlist, and as long as we keep an eye on it, we should be able to clean things up. If it does get too crazy, then we can ask someone else to step in. --Fire Star 02:43, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Fantastic sir, I would very much like to talk about JKD with you. To email you I need to set up my email? --ShuckyDucky 21:01, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ranges
Greetings. I changed the info on ranges that traditional styles train because it is too general a statement. For example, the style I teach, as well as several others that I am familar with (Baguazhang, Xingyiquan), have training for all of the ranges mentioned; plus movement, timing, positioning and footwork strategies for when the opponent(s) are still some distance away, each equally important. As well, the differences aren't just in the lexicon used, punching and kicking are both accomplished at medium and long ranges, which is a finer, yet practical, distinction than the ranges listed in the article. The only hierarchy is when they are introduced in the syllabus, in order from close to distant, but that timing is only based on leverage considerations, close leverage is more easily demonstrable to new students than distant leverage, according to the Wu family, at least. Wing Chun itself certainly only specialises in two ranges, so perhaps that would be a more accurate statement? Or maybe qualify the info by saying Bruce "claimed" that traditional arts specialised in one or two ranges? Bruce Lee looked into many arts cursorily, but he didn't study them all in detail, who could? We can still have the statement, properly qualified, but for us to state categorically that Bruce was actually correct about his opinions on the impracticality of all traditional arts is POV. Regards, --Fire Star 16:27, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Our comparing JKD with traditional, or traditional with traditional, or mixed with mixed, invites problems. We have to avoid any appearance of original research on the part of our edits to articles. What we can say that can be backed up pretty easily I would think is that fighters using Lee's principles or principles very similar to Lee's have been highly successful in MMA contests, and that Lee's philosophy (or variations of it) informs almost the entire MMA competition world. What would be a good thing to illustrate that point in the article would be a list of JKD fighters (or even competitors who've mentioned Bruce Lee's cross-training as an influence, since the JKD approach is necessarily amorphous) who have competed in Sanshou, UFC, Vale Tudo, etc., and how they placed. --Fire Star 18:52, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Also, if we could provide some links to martial arts journalism articles which propose that JKD is an important origin of modern MMA, that would go a long way to illustrate the point. --Fire Star 19:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bruce Lee
Greetings, I have been having the beginnings of a revert battle with a new user at the Bruce Lee article, I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to look in and give an opinion? Thanks, --Fire Star 03:03, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Khan1.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Khan1.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 04:57, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Critical Infrastructure Protection
Your article Critical Infrastructure Protection has appeared in the Dead End Pages list because it is not wikified. Please consult the Wikipedia Guide to Layout for more information on how to write a good, wikified article. I would encourage you to revisit your submissions and {{wikify}} them. Thanks and happy editing! James084 23:55, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Hello again. I reviewed your article Critical Infrastructure Protection further and wikified it a little for you. I also did some copyedit. I encourage you to review my changes and make sure I didn't water the article down in anyway. I thought it to be a very good article. I also "redlinked" Critical Infrastructure because I thought that there maybe enough for this to become it's own article. Maybe if you find some time. Thanks! James084 02:30, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Mr. Flint
Cool Cat, Thanks for fixing the flint bio box. I have reverted to the previous until we can resize the image. I like your changes but the Image is too large. I have tried unsuccessfully. Is there a way of doing this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks FrankWilliams 00:15, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Just use the Size parameter. Example: |Size = 200px
- I'll do this one for you, but in the future please ask before taking action. I am here only to help. :)

- Correct me if I am wrong but why is the image "too large" its not pixelated at all in fact the image in qyestion can be as large as 485px. I am a bit confused. --Cool CatTalk|@ 00:49, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Please add a Wikipedia:Fair use rationale to this image, as all images uploaded after May 4, 2006 require one, or they will be deleted in 7 days. --Rory096 06:37, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use/Fair use rationale, except customize it a bit to the image (like "it will be used in the article about [whatever the subject is]"). --Rory096 06:48, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Just edit the image page and add a short section on why it would be considered fair use and meet our fair use policy. It doesn't have to be long, just a few bullet points. --Rory096 06:53, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi FrankWilliams! Thanks for the great article on the Giants Trilogy. It had been on my to do list for some time. Those are great cover scans as well. Nice work on the text. It is excellent work, with only the most minor of typos (which I fixed). Thanks again! EncMstr 20:30, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

In the first place, not using the prose to reference the pictures (the "See Also"). In the second, using the standard "wikitable" class for the appearance. Besides both of those, and my previously mentioned reasons for not having an image gallery, I've just unwittingly discovered that the gallery and TV infobox overlap and break at a 1024 x 768 resolution. --FuriousFreddy 01:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] JKD Name
FrankWilliams, I actually meant it to be read as I was never a student of Wong or H. Williams. I have been a student in various Martial Arts for about 20 years and I was a student in JKD under two different teachers for a couple of those. Currently I train myself, as I've found quality of teachers and atmosphere hard to come by. I don't really go for all the machismo and idol worshipping that tends to permeate some schools, including Lee or any of his students. At one point in time I read any and all information I could get on Bruce Lee. I believe Wikipedia should not only provide concise and accurate information but also full discolosure. I reverted the last major edit because it actually cut out pertinent info and added extraneous(if you were curious). I actually did email from my hotmail account back when you last gave me directions on how to. Are you still interested in carrying on a correspondence? ShuckyDucky 18:28, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Iron Fist covers
I think WP:FU guidelines are unnecessarily harsh, but paranoia is always a better default position when it comes to something as vague as intellectual copyright. Personally, I always believe that in-line illustrations are better than cover galleries, but that's a matter of taste. As I noted in the talk page, fair use is fair use no matter where the mention of the issues are, but the issues should be discussed in a meaningful way to justify fair use criteria.
I intend to rewrite much of Iron Fist over the next week or so when I find the time, and perhaps then you'll have a stronger case for including some of the covers once I add various citations to the main text. --khaosworks (talk • contribs) 16:22, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Black-Swan.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Black-Swan.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Image:10FP.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:10FP.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 20:29, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hello. I'm afraid that there is no way to make Image:10FP.jpg acceptable for use on Wikipedia. So long as it would be possible for someone to photograph a Savage 10FP rifle and release the photo under a free license (and that's certainly possible), then we can't use a non-free image of the rifle. The only exception would be if the copyright holder (Savage Arms) agreed to release the photo under a free license. It might be worth asking. (Wikipedia:Example requests for permission might help with this.) If they won't release the image under a free license, however, our best bet would be to find and photograph the rifle ourselves. All the best, – Quadell (talk) (random) 13:19, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tao of Jeet Kune Do
- It is already explained in the first few sentences that the book comes from Bruce Lee's notes, yet it was compiled by a 3rd party. It is not an opinion but rather a fact that using up half an article to make sure the ape in the local zoo understood that Bruce Lee didn't write the book since Wikipedia is meant for that 99.99999999% who understood it from the first sentence.
- Saying who published a book is not reference. Have a look at other books and you'll see that if any publisher is actually mentioned (and not the word "if"), it's only the original one. It is out of this mind to list all publishers of a book.
- This is not a collector's site. It may be important to collectors, but it simply a reedition of the same book. Nobody cares a damn if it's in hardback or in paperback. If you read the book, I don't see why you should care either.
[edit] Response
Yes, it is explained in the first few sentences and yet there are editors that still don't get it. The publisher of an given work is important to others who may wish to find a copy for themselves. There are a great number of people who care about the editions. Thanks for your comments; cheers. FrankWilliams 02:35, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] JKD: Name, and Trapping
Hello again FrankWilliams. I apologize I never got back to you. I'm sorry to see at the top of your user page you are going to be inputing as much. I think Wikipedia is great but would like to see more constructive input, from such as people like you, rather than vandals. One thing I noticed on the JKD page was the quote from Inosanto: The term Jeet Kune Do occured in 1968 while Dan Inosanto and Bruce Lee were driving around in his car. The conversation involved western fencing and Lee commented that; "the most efficient means of countering in fencing was the stop-hit...When the the opponent attacks, you intercept his move with a thrust or hit of your own.." Lee then said "We should call our method the 'stop-hitting fist style;, or the 'intercepting fist style". Dan Inosanto then said; "What would that be in Chinese?" in which Lee replied "That would be Jeet Kune Do". I recall listening to Jesse Glover at a seminar say Lee would talk about a form called Jeet Kune. I beleived this must have taken place in the late 50's, and actually I think this info is in the book "From Wing Chun to Jeet Kune Do". The book is a good read if you can find it. Keep in mind also that "Do" is a Japanese word. As far as trapping is concerned, I don't do it. So my input would be negligble. Also of note is to look into Lee's writings. From what i gather he never had a fourth range, he did not include trapping into his ranges. Keep in mind I am talking about Lee's notes, not any of the books that have been written about JKD. Keep up the good work. ShuckyDucky 00:03, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- I have read through the Bruce Lee Library, I think they are a great resource. From what I recall, I had heard about the four ranges and then scoured through quite a few books looking for the trapping range mentioned but I don't think I found it. Quite possibly I could just not have looked close enough. As far as the name goes, I was under the assumption he came up with the name long before he officially coined the term. Well for what it's worth I think you make valid and factual edits to Wikipedia, you shouldn't quite. Currently I am being retaliated against by Guardian Tiger who is Apocalyptic Destroyer, who is RaGnaRoK SepHír0tH who is RevolverOcelotX....good times. I beleive you may recognize some of those names. Have a good one.ShuckyDucky 04:33, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lee & Trapping
You are quite correct in your statement. My specific assertion was that he talked about three ranges and not four. I could see that Trapping could easily fall within Grappling range, but like I said I don't specifically do Trapping. I know there are a lot of teachers who teach it as a stand alone technique. I gues it comes back to what we discussed already as far as what Lee specifically taught or the extrapolation there of. Product vs Process. By the way I hope you are having some Happy Holidays.ShuckyDucky 20:09, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Anon IP and Jeet Kune Do
Looking this over cursorily, it appears to be a content dispute that's developing into an edit war. I don't feel qualified to come in on either side of the argument, but I would be careful not to run afoul of the Three Revert Rule while doing this. Perhaps you can look over Wikipedia:Resolving disputes to see where you can take it from there. Informal mediation seems to be the next logical step right now, or asking for third opinions. --khaosworks (talk • contribs) 15:27, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
