In the german Wikipedia, it's written that Franz Xaver Messerschmidt was a german sculptor. Where is the truth?

FXM was born in Wiesensteig Germany, spent his early youth in Munich. He is thus by definition a German. He did however spent much of his life in the Austro Hungarian empire. Much in Vienna and the last few years of his life in Bratislava. Herb http://www.delarte.com
